Installing a Closet Bi-Fold Door

The type of door most often used for closets and other storage areas of the home is the bi-fold door. This door is on sliding track so that one half of the door folds back over the other. You don't need to have the same amount of space as you do with a door that opens in the regular fashion. You don't need to provide for the swing of the door as it opens inwards or outwards. When you open bi-fold doors, you still have access to the full space of the closet.

Because of the sturdy track installed on the top edge of the door, it moves from the center to the side of the door opening. You don't need to have a professional perform the installation for you as all the instructions come in the packaging and the only tool you will need is the basic screwdriver. Although doors in this style with louvered slats were once in style, today they come in solid doors in the same designs as the other doors in your home.

Make sure you finish or paint the door before you install it because it will be much harder to do once you have it in place. You will have to be mindful of the floor and the painted wall surfaces surrounding the opening. Label the door so that you know which side will be facing outward. Make two measurements - one at 11 inches from the bottom of the door and another 7 inches from the top. Then measure the distance between these tow points to find the center. Place the door on its side so that these marks are facing you.

Now you install the hinges on the door. When you have this completed, you start installing the track on which the door will slide. The diagrams that come with the included hardware have pictures for you to go by when completing this step. For example, you have to screw a pivot plate on the top of the door. This is the section that will fit into the track. Cut the track to the length you need to fit the opening. Slide on the hanging hardware and then attach the track to the door header.

Attach the hinges to the side of the door and slip the pivots into the sliding hardware. Your door is then ready to use.

Different Types of Composite Doors

Composite doors are a necessity if you are concerned about the security of your house along with its looks. These doors are preferred over original wooden doors because of umpteen advantages. Affordability and durability are just a few of its major advantages. And no one can just stop talking about variety when it comes to these doors. The multifaceted designs and colors of these doors add that special gloss and glamour quotient to your home. There are no standard and predefined types of composite doors. It varies with the color and the make. Over the years manufacturers have come up with various models and set their own types with company specifications. However, the thumb rule is to choose the one that fits your home the most in terms of look as well safety requirements.

The size of composite doors is yet another factor that determines its types. Don't ever think of buying any door that looks nice without matching its height with the space that you have for front door. The position of the door is also crucial and determinant. These doors can be used both as front and back doors. They are also popular as garage doors as that is one area that needs special safety attention. The five-point locking system that comes with these doors is of special help here. The most popular types of these doors are composite bi-fold doors, composite exterior door, composite garage door, composite interior door, composite screen door etc. This list, as already mentioned, is not exhausted as it keeps changing with the manufacturers.

Bi-fold composite doors are better known as aluminium doors and are rising high on the popularity charts. They are durable as well as great in style. Good quality aluminium doors undergo thorough testing before they are made ready for sale. These doors are the preferred type of composite doors because of its flexibility. It is easy to tilt and normally they are insulated and made weather proof. These doors are best suited if you own a home in a location featured by diverse climatic conditions. However, the best benefit of these doors is that it is difficult to bend them and so there are lesser chances of deformation. So with aluminium composite doors you can rest assured about the unaltered look. To protect aluminium composite doors you should make it a point to have casement done. This will protect the look and the core strength of the doors and thereby bolster the safety of your home.

What's the Difference Between a Pre-Hung Door and a Slab Door?

When installing a door, you may wonder what is the difference between a
prehung door and a slab door, and when you might use one door over the
other. Let's look at the definitions first.

What is a Pre-Hung Door?
A pre-hung door is, as the name
implies, a door that is already hanging in its own frame. It's a fully
self-contained unit. Even before installation, it's theoretically
possible to open and close the door within its own frame (it's not
advisable, though, as you might torque the frame and damage it). The
main parts of a pre-hung door are: door slab, hinges, and frame.

What is a Slab Door?

A slab door is what we normally think of when we think of doors: just a rectangular slab of wood, composite, or steel.
It has no hinges or hardware. It's up to the remodeler to attach it to the door frame via hinges.

Which is Cheaper--a Pre-Hung Door or a Slab Door?

All factors being equal, a slab door is cheaper simply because it
consists of less materials. Also, given the weight of the pre-hung
door, it costs more to ship the pre-hung door and thus the cost is
passed onto the consumer.

When Would I Use Prehung Door?

Some factors that may influence your decision to install a prehung door:

When there is no existing door frame.

When the existing door frame is so damaged or warped as to make it impossible to hang a slab door.

When doing new construction or extensive remodeling. If the
door frame is open and exposed, you may find it easier to install a
prehung door than a slab door.

When installing an exterior door. Prehung doors come
weathertight off the shelf: you don't need to do anything to make them
tight-fitting. Unless you are a real pro, it's extremely difficult to
install a tight-fitting exterior slab door.

When Would I Use Slab Door?

Some factors that may influence your decision to install a slab door:

When cost is a factor.

When you want to install an antique or otherwise unique door in an existing place.

If you find it difficult to handle the weight and bulkiness of
a prehung door (slab doors, though still cumbersome, are lighter than a
prehung door unit).

When installing an interior door. It doesn't matter if interior slab doors are weathertight.

What are the Downsides of Installing a Prehung Door?
Prehung
doors are extremely heavy and hard to manage. You may be able to manage
a prehung interior door because their door slabs are made of light
material and are often hollow inside. Prehung exterior doors need at
least two strong people to manage. Also, prehung doors aren't as easy
to install as they seem. Yes, you don't have to worry about exacting
task of hanging the slab to the doorframe, but you still have the
exacting task of fitting the prehung unit into the wall. The prehung
units need shimming. If not done right, shimming can completely ruin
the way the slab fits into the frame and the way it swings. After
you've installed the prehung door unit, you still need to finish all of
the work around it: drywall, painting, molding, siding (if an exterior
door).
How About Downsides of Installing a Slab Door?

Slab door installation requires a steady hand, a good eye, and lots of
practice. You'll probably be fine if you're doing a one-for-one
installation. That is, if the door you are installing is exactly the
same size and has the same configurations (screw holes for the hinges,
door knob sizing and positioning, etc.) as the door you are removing.
Any variation in door size and configurations, and it will be
difficult, if not impossible, to make it hang right.

Can You Summarize the Prehung Doors vs. Slab Doors Argument?
Sure.
If your house is torn-up from restoration work or you're constructing a
new space, you'll be installing a prehung door. If you're got a good
doorframe in place and aren't keen on tearing out drywall, install a
slab door. No method is really easier than the other, and each has its
own special worries.

From Lee Wallender
Selecting an Entry Door Style

If
you want to dramatically change the front of your house, start with
your entry door. A new entry door with etched glass sidelights and a
bold transom window can make an important design statement. This is one
home improvement project that can provide a good return on investment.

Blend Door Style with Home’s Architecture

The first step is to examine your home’s architecture. The new door
should blend with the lines of the house, as well as the exterior
materials. If your windows have a 9-light pattern, look for a door that
matches. If you have stained glass windows, find an entry door with similar detailing. If the roof has a high pitch, try a taller and perhaps wider door to balance with the roofline.

Building Materials Affect Entry Door Selection

Also look for an entry door that mimics the color, texture and style
of your home’s exterior. If you have a brick or stone house, look for a
wooden door,
or one that mimics the natural beauty of wood. Find a color that
complements the exterior material. With a contemporary ranch house, a
fiberglass door would blend just fine.

Entry Door Options

There are hundreds of options in entry doors, from simple to ornate. You’ll want to select:

The number of panels on the front

The amount of glass

Arched windows above the door

As you look at entry doors, consider whether you want to make a
subtle statement or a more dramatic one. Also think about privacy when
you decide on:

Sidelights - clear, obscure or not at all.

Door panels - do you want any glass? Should it be obscured for added privacy?

Transoms - they add light, but reduce privacy.

A new entry door is an important home improvement project, as it can
dramatically change your home’s façade. Consider all the options
carefully before selecting a new door.

Roller Shutter Doors are one of the most popular doors used in commercial, industrial as well as residential settings. With the rising security issues in our localities, Roller Shutter Doors provide security solutions.

Roller Shutter is a sort of curtain with interlocking slats that forms a continuous hinge along the whole length. This arrangement helps to roll up or down the curtain as per requirement on a spring loaded barrel, which is held by steel support brackets. The door is installed easily and once it is installed, it requires a small amount of space. Roller Shutter Doors are of two types- single skinned roller shutter doors and twin skinned roller shutter doors.

Uses of Roller Shutter Doors
The Roller Shutter Doors are functional doors that provide security from rain, water, theft and pollution etc. The doors are also used as an interior décor element as there are many stylish designs available. The contemporary designs of the roller shutter doors make it a design statement that adds style to your home.
Roller Shutters are more effective than the normal doors as they are stronger, occupy less space and provide extra security to the official and residential complex where they are installed. Most of these doors are installed in residences, commercial and industrial compounds.

Kaiser doors specialize in different types of UK Roller Shutter door. You can find industrial doors, fire doors, high speed door, PVC strip curtains, Sectional Overhead doors, Barriers and fencing. These specialized doors serve specific purposes. The fire doors are used to stop the spread of fire and smoke in case of a fire accident and also help in compartmentalizing the fire. The industrial doors are used for security purposes while the high speed doors help in saving energy due to their high speeds and creating a comfortable working environment. PVC strip curtains help in reducing noise pollution reduce air and heat loss and also reduces the movement of airborne pollutants, thus help in maintaining a healthy working environment.

Overhead doors are required in commercial and industrial establishments. Garage doors are the most common example of overhead doors, though they have many other usages. The overhead doors lift upwards and open overhead.
These doors are operated manually or can also be operated electronically. In the Manual operation the door is opened by a push-up operation. All such Push-up doors generally have a handle that is used to lift them, which is fitted to the bottom panel. The manually operated doors that are too big have a chain that is used to raise the door with the help of reduction gears and hand chain. The Electric overhead doors can be operated by a push button control. Other buttons are also present to control the door along with an emergency hand chain for manual operation.

The balance of overhead doors can be achieved with the help of helical springs carried on a steel shaft. Springs help to balance the weight of the overhead door and lift the door. Springs can be used as ‘extension springs’ as well as ‘torsion springs’. These Extension springs are independent and therefore the doors are shaky. The Torsion springs work together and help in providing a smooth work operation. These are safe and superior option.
These door panels are made of galvanized sheets and are bonded together with a high density, CFC free from foam core and are also fire resistant. It has a steel front and steel back insulated door which is sturdy and superior. The doors are insulated and thermally efficient plus they come in wood-look designs. The doors can be effectively used as commercial, residential as well as industrial doors. The doors can be modified in pet doors, mail slots and etc. They can even include lever handles, cylinder lock, over head closer etc.

The Kaiser doors are generally tailor made and can be installed according to factors like height etc. The finest materials are used to increase the durability, functionality and operation etc.

Sliding shower doors are a great improvement over a curtain, but what if you need to remove them for cleaning?

Steps

Look at the bottom track. It is an extruded aluminum rail. The edge that is inside of the shower is probably shorter than the outside edge of the track.

Look at the top track. The top of the door should have wheels that ride against the top shower rail.

Stand inside the shower.

Grasp the near door with both hands and lift door. The bottom of the door will lift high enough to clear the inside edge of the track.

Lean bottom of door towards you as top of door remains in top track.

Lower door to clear top track. You have removed the door.

Storm doors installed outside of exterior doors protect them from the elements and create an insulating air space between the doors. Some are designed to be entirely removed and stored, others have screens which can be interchanged with glass or acrylic panels for use during warmer weather. Self-storing models allow the glass/acrylic panels to slide into another position on the door without needing to be removed.

A large range of materials and options affect the price and quality of storm doors. Full view panels allow the exterior door to be seen, kick plates protect the lower portion of the door, vents on the top or bottom of the door allow circulation, security features such as grids and dead bolt locks add an extra barrier of protection.

High end doors often come with full 10-year warranties that guarantee complete replacement of the door within the warranty period. If you have a copy of your warranty, check it out to see if it may still be valid.

The most popular colors are natural mill aluminum, bronze and white but many manufacturers offer a wider assortment of colors including black, hunter green, almond, brown, cranberry and even indigo.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DOORS FOR YOUR NEW HOME

When you are building your own home, or contracting it to be built, the selection of the right doors is critical. When we built our home I found out that you can save on quality doors if you spend some time doing research. I would like to discuss some of your options when selecting the right doors in this article.

The Right Price for Your Doors

When we built our home, I had as most of you do, a budget, so finding quality doors at the right price was essential. My wife and I visited the home centers and specialty door shops but when we added the bill up for all the doors for our house, we knew we needed to find a wholesale supplier. We talk about how we managed our DIY home building project on our site, www.build-yourown-home.com.

We visited local houses that were being built and found out where the big builders were buying their doors and priced out doors there. We saved around 40% doing this. You can find out where the General Contractors buy their doors by going to the home sites and watching who delivers the doors to the houses. They usually have their trucks marked proudly.

I know that this sounds like a pain but think about the thousands of dollars you will save doing so. You’ve got to buy doors…. right?

What are the Right Doors for Your New Home?

I can’t help you with the specifics of choosing the doors for your home but I can help you choose general categories of doors. Your budget and taste will be the main factors in choosing doors for your new home. I will give you the criteria for buying doors for my house.

I choose metal doors for the outside of the home we built. I have owned several homes and they have had different types of doors including wood, fiberglass and metal. I found that wood exterior doors required more maintenance because wood is subject to weathering. If you live in a humid climate, wood doors will also swell and contract according to the climate, making the doors stick when it is humid. Needless to say, sticking doors is a real pain and the glass can break as someone tries to shove the door open!

Fiberglass doors were more expensive when we bought our home this is why I choose metal doors. Metal doors are not metal thru and thru. They are metal on the outside on top of a wood frame with a Styrofoam core in the center. This makes them very energy efficient. But some fiberglass doors are made to resemble wood.

The metal doors we chose were from a local company that purchased the doors in bulk and then sized them to order. They also cut out the door hardware openings to our request. In other words, if a customer wanted dead bolts and standard door hardware they came with two standard holes for the hardware.

You may want to also consider having your doors open "out" instead of in for added security (doors that open out have the door pins concealed and are harder to kick in) and more room inside the house. (This has to be decided before the door jams are installed.) Some building codes also require that all exterior doors open out to make exiting the premises easier in case of a fire. Check with your local building codes.
Door Problems Solved

As with all projects, doors have problems all their own. Do not be intimidated or discouraged at things that may be minor issues. Here are some questions and answers that may help you fix your door problems on your own:

Install

Q: The top of out newly installed door either sticks to the frame or the whole door swings either open or shut. Did we do something wrong when we hung it?

A: You likely didn't do anything wrong. Sometimes it is the frame itself. The best option is to restructure or replace the frame. The cause is most likely that the frame has settled or a hinge jamb is out of plumb. To fix binding, install a shim under the top hinge if the bind is near the bottom or under the bottom hinge if the bind is near the top. If the door hinge jamb is not plumb, shim under whichever hinge will cause the door edge to hang truly vertical. To install a shim, support the door as explained above, remove the hinge jamb screw, and cut thin cardboard to fit into the mortise, under the hinge flap. Replace the screw, driving them through the cardboard into the jamb. If the door will not stay closed, the latch is not engaging with the strike. Built-up paint can cause this problem and simply be cleaned out. If the door is the problem and it is cut unevenly then you can contact the manufacturer and they will either fix it or replace it.

Repair

Q: One of our doors has recently begun to sag. We've had this door hanging for more than five years. Why is this happening now?

A: This is usually a simple problem. It's most likely that a hinge has just pulled loose, because the screws have lost their grip. To repair, just open the door completely and wedge a small piece(s) of wood underneath to support it. The remove the screws, fold back the hinge, and bore out the holes with a small drill bit. Cut dowels into small snug-fitting plugs and coat them with glue. Gently hammer them into the holes and after the glue is dry, cut off any excess that sticks out. Finally, drill pilot holes, and replace the screws.

Q: I've heard that door squeaks are a common problem, but I can't seem to find a common solution. Is there one?

A: Door hinges squeak because of lack of lubrication or built up paint or dirt. Going through one hinge at a time, remove the pin (by tapping upward on the nail inserted in the hole) and clean it with alcohol or mineral spirits. Next, clean out the knuckles that hold the pin using a cotton swab or a bit of rag dipped in solvent. Remove any extra paint and lubricate the pin and knuckles with lightweight household oil or spray lubricant.

Handyman

Q: Something is blocking out latch from entering its strike. Is this a simple problem or do we need to call someone to come in?

A: This is a fairly simple problem. Working on the edge that blocks the latch, first remove the strike and enlarge its opening with a flat metal file. The mortise may need to be slightly enlarged in the door jamb, which can be done with a wood chisel. If the latch and strike are just too far apart to meet, shim under the hinges and shift the door towards the strike jamb.

Garage Door

Q: My garage door opener is not opening my garage. What is the problem?

A: It could be a number of things. Carefully check to make sure that there are not any loose electrical wires attached to the door. It may be something as simple as your batteries are low in the opener.

REPARING A DOOR

This information can clarify and help answer some questions.

Door types: Knowing the type of door or doors that need repairing helps your service professional bring the right tools for the job. Every door type has different characteristics. For instance, exterior doors are heavier and generally have more hardware. Sliding doors usually present track repair problems.

Basic problems: If a door is painted or stained, there's a chance that the repair may remove some of the original paint or stain. Having matching paint or stain on hand could save money and hassle.

If you must replace your door's windows or the door itself, here are some tips to keep in mind. Keeping with today's concerns for saving energy, windows may be standard single glazed, dual glazed or even triple glazed. "R-values" measure heat loss through glass: the higher the R-value, the higher the glazing's resistance to energy loss. By increasing a window's R value from 2 to 4, you can cut energy loss by 50 percent.

Efficient solutions: Here are some energy-efficient options: Low-E glass has a virtually invisible metallic coating that reflects heat and protects carpets and furnishings from fading by reducing damaging ultraviolet rays from the sun. Even more efficient insulating windows have Argon gas, a natural, colorless, non-toxic gas that is sealed between glass panes. Insulating Low-E glass filled with Argon gas has about twice the insulating qualities of standard dual glazing.

Solar bronze and solar gray tinted glass help keep out unwanted heat and ultraviolet rays. If there is a possibility of ultraviolet (UV) damage to floors, rugs and furniture, consider choosing a glazing that resists UV rays.

Most doors are designed to look like wood. Materials such as steel and fiberglass can simulate the look of wood, plus they are more affordable, have a greater insulation value, and require far less maintenance.

All-wood doors are made from softwoods or hardwoods, which are more durable and elegant. Fiberglass-composite doors, made from a core of rigid insulation clad with a fiber-reinforced polymer, are often embossed with artificial wood grain so they look like wood. Steel doors, made of heavy-gauge, galvanized steel over a core of rigid foam, are strong but look less like wood. Their surfaces usually are coated with polymer or vinyl and are wood-grain embossed. You can also buy doors that consist of veneer applied over solid wood, or veneer applied over a hollow core.

Position new onto bottom of door. Note: The staple-on door bottom may seal better if a small spot of adhesive or caulk is applied to the bottom of the door before installing. Use just enough to touch both surfaces.

Staple from the center and work your way to both ends. This will reduce the likely hood of ripples in the door bottom when applied. It is also best if the staples are staggered to both the inside and outside of the door sweep.

Re-install door. Note: If replacing door by yourself, be careful not to hurt yourself. Some wood doors are very heavy.

There are many storm door companies. Some storm door companies are national like Andersen, Emco, Gerkin and Larsen.

Styles - 3 basic styles of storm doorsMany storm door companies make over 20 models of storm doors. They offer so many choices of storm doors that the consumer sometimes has a hard time decideing what they want. With 3 basic styles of storm doors, start with what you want the door to look like, then select the features

Removable glass storm doors. The removable glass storm door has a glass that can be removed. The glass is held in with either plastic retainer strips or some type of hardware or parts that are removed and reinstalled when the screen is installed.

Non-removable glass storm doors. This type of door usually costs less. The glass is fixed into the door and can not be removed.

Self storing glass storm doors. This type of storm door does not require the glass to be removed and stored. The glass panel just sides up and down to open or close for ventilation.

InstallationWho is going to install your storm door? The best product is only as good as the installation. Whether you do it yourself or hire someone proper performance comes from a proper installation.
Features - Choose Wisely!

Storm Door Hardware: The first feature that should be addressed when selecting your storm door is the Hardware. The hardware comes in a variety of styles and finishes. The finish is what you notice the most after a year. Most brass hardware will tarnish, corrode and discolor. The new ?PVD? Finish is what you want if a bright brass finish is desired a year from now. The new ?PVD? storm door hardware is designed not to tarnish, corrode or discolor.

Bottom Vent Panel: One option of fullview storm doors is a small vent panel at the bottom of the storm door. This is a good thing for several reasons. first, it makes the door more rigid. Secondly, it allows the door closure to mount somewhere stronger that the surface of the storm door. Finally, it allows the homeowner to get some ventilation.

Top Vent Panels: Some storm door companies offer a special top vent hardware options. The idea is the top vent will keep the heat from building up between the storm door and your primary door. The truth is this option could be a waste of money. The reality is that the hot air just sits there and can not escape except on those windy days and even then it does very little.

Tinted Glass: Tinted and Low E Glass do a great job of offering some U-V protection and cutting down on the heat between the storm and entry door. The cost could be around $100 but if your door faces the sun it may be a good investment Among other things it may prevent damage to the main entry door.

Insulated Main Frame: A Storm door is over 90% glass. The benefit of an insulated frame is outweighed by the cost. This should not be a deciding factor in the storm door.

Storm Door Hardware Replacement

If you want to change your storm door hardware to something nicer, it may be easier than you think. Many times door and window parts are interchangeable with little or no modifications.
Its as Simple as 1 2 3

Measure the thickness of your storm door from 7/8? to 1-7/8?

Determine the type of storm door hardware , either mortise or surface mount (see below).

Select the storm door hardware and finish that best suits your storm door and personality.

Mortise Lock:
A mortise lock is one where the lock body is inside the door. The most common brands of storm door hardware are Pado, Papaiz, Emco, Emtek and Wright Hardware Many steel security doors and aluminum storm doors used mortise hardware. The old style polished brass mortise Hardware tarnished, corroded and discolored. The newer storm door hardware that has the ?PVD? No Tarnish, No Corrode, No Discolor finish was not designed the same as the older storm door hardware. Mortise locks are the most intimidating of the storm door hardware to change because they are not an exact match. However, most of the time it only requires drilling a couple of new holes.

First, If you don?t care about the new ?PVD? No Tarnish finish on your storm door hardware, then keep it simple. Replace with the same thing you have or a similar storm door hardware set that fits your hole pattern..
Second, If you want the new ?PVD? Finish and don?t mind spending a few dollars more, than just follow the simple steps outlined below.

Note: Some brands or types of hardware require longer screws or spindles depending on the thickness of the storm door.

Surface Mount: One Piece Handle Set
The most common thing about older surface mount storm door hardware is the hole pattern. The standard hole pattern is 3 holes spaced 7/8 inch apart or 1-3/4? from the top hole to the bottom. Most of the older storm door hardware only had a push button type black or silver handle.

A few storm doors used a 1-1/2? hole pattern on their hardware. Not very common and seemed to be used only on the older push buttom type storm door handles.
Many of the new style lift and lever storm door handles will replace the old ones.
Surface Mount: One Piece Handle Set with Deadbolt
The storm doors from the late 90?s used a Polished brass combination handleset with a deabolt that was interconnected with one piece decorative levers and knobs. Most of these had a 3-post screws on the outside hardware. The screw hole sizes and patterns changed from the traditional storm door hardware and the inside used a separated two piece handle and deadbolt. .
With the new century came new storm door hardware. Polished brass handlesets are slowly replaced with Nickel Silver, Pewter, Oil Rubbed Bronze and other finishes. With the change in finishes came a change in styles and the 3-post storm door hardware was replaced with a 4-post. The screw hole patterns changed and are not readily interchangeable. Some of the new finished came with a ?PVD? Lifetime Finish.

Surface Mount: Two Piece Handle Set with Deadbolt
Handle set with a seperate deadbolt. When the storm door hardware set was included as a separate hardware item the deadbolt was mounted above the storm door handle but still had the same 3 hole pattern.
When replacing older hardware with new the placement of the holes is the most important factor.Note: Some brands or types of hardware require longer screws or spindles depending on the thickness of the storm door.

How to Replace the Rollers on your Patio Door

Opening your patio sliding glass door should be an easy task. If your sliding door is giving you a work out every time you open it, most likely it is your rollers that are causing the problem. The rollers are located on the bottom of the sliding door and give the door the ability to slide. Often times they get dirty and wear out, making it difficult to open the door. If you have an older sliding glass door your rollers may have become rusty because sliding door units did not always use stainless steel rollers.

Hiring a professional to replace your rollers could cost you around $100 not including the cost of the replacement parts. Below are detailed steps containing all the information you will need to know to replace your patio sliding glass door rollers yourself.

Before you start, understand that you need to take the sliding glass door out of its frame to work on the rollers. The sliding glass door is heavy. You may need the assistance of another to help you remove the door.

1) Your patio glass door will have two separate glass units.

One unit is the door that you slide and the other unit is stationary. First, stand outside your house and look at your sliding glass door. If the stationary door unit is between you and the sliding unit you will most likely have to remove the stationary unit so that you can get to the glass sliding unit.

Before you go through the trouble of removing the stationary door unit, first try to go inside your house and see if you can remove the sliding door unit. Usually you cannot because there is a lip along the bottom of the patio glass door frame (it keeps moisture out of the house) that prevents the sliding glass door from being removed from the inside.

If the rollers on the bottom of the door are difficult to get over the lip, you can adjust them to help you create more room (go down to step 2). If it is not the rollers but the sliding unit’s frame preventing you from pulling the sliding unit out of the door frame, you are going to need to remove the stationary door unit first before you can remove the sliding unit.

To remove the stationary door unit, you first need to take out your screen door (if you have one). Lift one end of the screen door frame and use a screwdriver to lift the roller on the bottom of the screen door frame off of the track. Do this to both ends of the screen door and your screen door will pull out of the door frame.

The stationary door unit is held in place by a metal piece that runs along the bottom of the track from the corner of the stationary door unit to the bottom of the side jamb (there is a chance this piece is missing but if you do have one remove it from the track). After you have removed the metal piece, look for screws holding the stationary unit frame in place. After removing all of the screws try pulling the stationary door unit out of the door frame. If you are having trouble pulling out the stationary door unit, try placing a screwdriver between the stationary door unit’s bottom frame and the track it is resting on. Lift up on the screwdriver while you have a helper pull out the stationary door unit from the door frame. Be careful not to use too much force with the screwdriver so that you do not damage the door track.

2) You may need to create more room when you attempt to remove the sliding unit from the door frame.

To create more room you can adjust the rollers on the bottom of the sliding unit. By turning the adjusting screws on the rollers clockwise the wheels move up into the sliding unit’s frame giving you more room. The adjusting screws are located either at the bottom of the sliding unit’s frame or in the sides of the frame. There is a chance that there are plugs covering the screws.

After you adjust both rollers (one on each side of the sliding unit’s frame) try to remove the sliding unit from the door frame. If the unit is still getting stuck you may need to get someone to help you. Have your helper lift one side of the unit and pull outwards while you try to pry the other side of the unit over the track.

3) To remove the rollers from most sliding unit’s you need to remove the bottom of the sliding unit’s frame.

Most likely the screw that holds the roller in place is the same screw that holds the frame together. Remove the screw from both sides of the unit. Then try to remove the bottom piece of the frame off of the sliding unit; you may need to use a rubber mallet or a piece of wood and tap on the bottom of the frame until it comes off of the sliding unit.

Now that you have removed the bottom of the frame you can take a close look at your patio glass door rollers. Remove one of the rollers and match it up with one of the rollers on this page:

http://www.swisco.com/page/SI/CTGY/patio-glass-rollers-wheels-axles

You can try your local hardware store, of course, but be sure to bookmark this page! Swisco has a huge selection of patio door rollers online that your hardware store can't match, including those for discontinued door models!

It is a good idea to replace both sliding door rollers at the same time to prevent extra wear-and-tear to one new roller, which will have to work twice as hard when paired with an old roller.

4) After your new rollers come in, replace your old rollers with the new ones.

To make it easier to install the sliding unit back into the door frame, adjust the rollers to be all the way up into the frame. Once you have the sliding unit back in the door frame you can adjust the rollers for optimal performance. Keep adjusting the rollers until the door is sliding back and forth easily.

We recommend Grade 1 (ANSI designation) deadbolt type locks on:

Exterior doors

Doors between attached garages and living spaces

Garage man doors (even if the garage is not attached to the house.)

What kind of door locks do building codes require?

Although many people assume their local building codes require a minimum level of quality and security for the door locks installed on their homes, most building codes don't even require a lock on exterior doors, let alone a minimum level of quality.

Door Locks From a Burglar's Perspective

Burglars prefer to break into a home through a door because it is quick and easy.

A good quality lock is a deterrent. When intruders are interviewed about the selection of a target, many say seeing quality deadbolt locks will cause them to move on to another house.

A burglar can enter the home through a door using several methods:

The door can be left unlocked.

Doors can be kicked in.

Door locks can be picked.

Door locks can be hammered until they fall off.

Doors can be pried open.

Door frames can be spread apart with a spreader bar.

Door locks can be "drilled out" using a power drill.

Locks can be pried off with pipe wrenches or pliers.

Panes of glass in or beside doors can be broken so the intruder can reach in and unlock the lock.

Sometimes thieves obtain a copy of the house key from an acquaintance.

Remember, the intruder will select the door that looks easiest to break into and that offers the least chance of being seen.

Doors going into the garage and going from an attached garage into the house many times offer an intruder the opportunity to hide from view while they are breaking in. Extra thought should go into the security at these locations.

According to a study by the California Crime Technological Research Foundation, the most common techniques used by burglars to enter single-family homes are (from most often used to least often used):

32.00% Through unlocked window or door

26.64% Forced entry by impacts

24.02% Prying or jimmying

6.79% Use of pass key or picking the lock

5.10% Entry attempted, but failed

5.45% Other or unknown1

Learn more about how to protect your home from intruders.

Tips:

1.) Install locks with deadbolts.

In residential construction there are basically two types of bolts used on exterior doors: latch bolts and deadbolts. Some locks combine the two bolts into one.

2.) Install locks with an ANSI Grade 1 classification.

There is a grading system that measures the security and durability of door locks. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has standards, developed and maintained by The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association Inc. (BHMA), that comparatively measure the security and durability performance of door locks.

Not all Grade 1 locks are equal. Different types of door locks are tested differently under ANSI standards. But the grade designation system is the same.

3.) Install locks with key control.

Key control is simply controlling who has copies of keys to your home. Many door keys can be copied at a local hardware or retail store. However, many manufacturers now offer locks using keys that cannot be copied except by certain locksmiths or only by the manufacturer themselves.

There are burglaries where the unlawful entry can be traced back to a key that was either knowingly or unwittingly provided to the burglar.

Key control can help protect your from the following scenarios:

In-home help has been fired or quit, but they made their own copy of your house key.

In-home help may have acquaintances who burglarize homes; they might try to acquire a key through them

Mechanics may try to make copies of your house key while working on your car.

Key control may require extra effort, such as a letter to the lock manufacturer or a trip to the locksmith to get a key made. Also, there is an additional cost due to record keeping by the manufacturer or locksmith (between $10 and $50 per key). The additional cost and inconvenience should be weighed against the security benefits.

Other Door Lock Features to Look For

Security Strike Plate -- A strike plate comes with every door lock. Many times these strike plates are cosmetic and not intended to provide much security.

The strike plate's attachment to the doorframe is usually the weakest point in the entire door/doorframe/lock system.

High security strike plates are available. They sometimes come with a heavy gauge metal reinforcing plate that mounts under the cosmetic strike plate and come with 3" long screws that secure the strike to the wall framing, not just to the doorframe jamb.

The screw holes are staggered so the screws don't penetrate into the same grain of wood. The concept of screwing into different wood grains in the doorframe and wall framing is to make it more difficult to split the wood doorframe or wall framing when the door is impacted. This feature should be considered at every exterior door and at those doors coming from attached garages.

Long Screws

1" Minimum Throw on Deadbolt -- The throw of the deadbolt is the length that the deadbolt extends out of the door edge. A minimum throw of 1" is recommended. Longer throws makes it more difficult to gain entry by spreading the doorframe.

Saw-Resistant Bolts -- Some deadbolts come with internal anti-saw pins. The pins spin freely inside the bolt. If someone tries to break in by sawing off the deadbolt, the pin will make this difficult because it spins back and forth with every movement of the saw blade.

Captured Key Deadbolt -- Burglars can gain entry through a locked door by breaking the glass in the door light or sidelight, reaching in, and simply unlocking the door. Many homeowners, in an effort to prevent this, install double cylinder deadbolt locks with keyholes on both sides of the door.

Don't let Double Cylinder Deadbolts create a fire safety danger to your family.

In the case of a fire when the family needs to get out of the house quickly, you don't want to be wasting time looking for the key to unlock the door. Most building codes do not allow this type of lock on doors that are used to exit the house for this very reason.

To solve this conflict between family safety and security, one manufacturer has developed a deadbolt lock with a feature called a captured key.

On the interior side of the door the deadbolt lock has a thumb turn that can be removed from the lock, leaving a keyhole. The idea is when no one is home, there is no need for the thumb-turn. The last person to leave removes the thumb-turn and creates a double cylinder deadbolt condition.

Captured Key Thumb-turn -- The thumb-turn cannot be removed without having a key to the lock. Therefore, small children cannot remove the thumb-turn from the lock. Also, the thumb-turn can actually be used as a house key. It is important that whenever anyone is in the home that the thumb-turn is left in the lock at all times.

Hardened Cased Steel & Beveled Casings -- On a typical deadbolt lock the outside housing of the lock is called the "casing" or "case." Many lock manufacturers make their casings out of hardened steel and many make the casing beveled. The hardened cased steel makes the casing more resilient against blows from a hammer. Beveling the casing makes it very difficult to get pliers or pipe wrenches to stay on the lock when trying to twist it loose.

Anti-Drill Feature -- Some intruders know how to drill out a lock. Some manufacturers combat this by installing hardened steel chips within the lock housing. When the drill bit hits these steel chips, it tears up the drill bit.

Dropbolts and Rim Locks -- If a dropbolt or rim lock is selected, make sure the lock is mounted on the door with through bolts.

Dropbolt with Through Bolts and Without -- If not, a forced entry can cause the lock to separate from the door. The typical dropbolt and rim lock should not be considered as secure as a deadbolt lock.

Help in assessing the need for better security can be found with your local police department. Many departments have a crime prevention unit that will examine your home. Based on their experience with crime, they can see things that the average homeowner does not. Also, an experienced locksmith can help you select the right products.
