If
you’ve dreamed of opening French doors–doors with glass panes
throughout–to your patio or garden, you’re in luck. There is more
variety in them than ever before. But finding the right ones for your
taste and pocketbook can be a challenge: The range of door materials
and decorative options is vast and varies a great deal from one
manufacturer to another. Here’s what you need to know.

Materials

French doors are commonly available in wood, steel, aluminum, and
fiberglass. Some wood doors are covered with aluminum or vinyl. Most
manufacturers produce one or two of these door types.

Each door material has its advantages and disadvantages. “Metal- and
aluminum-clad doors need less maintenance over time, but wood provides
a higher quality, more traditional look,” says Tom Lawrence, of
Lawrence Architecture in Seattle.

Although an issue for all French doors, leakage is of particular
concern with wood doors. “Once a wood door becomes exposed to moisture,
it warps and starts to expand. Then it can easily start to stick,” says
Berkeley-based architect Gary Earl Parsons. Vinyl stands up to rain but
can become brittle from exposure to UV rays.

Some door materials are noisier than others. Steel doors clang and aluminum doors make less noise, but wood is the quietest.

Glazing

Whether you want to protect against solar heat gain, prevent heat
loss, or simply create a more decorative effect, there is a glass
available to suit every situation. Insulating (including argon
gas–filled), tinted, noise-deadening, tempered, distortion-free,
impact-resistant, opaque, and translucent glass are just some of the
possibilities.

For many manufacturers, insulating glass is standard; with others it
is available upon request. Some manufacturers offer a range of
energy-efficient glazing options.

Lights

Each pane of glass in a French door is referred to as a light.
Single-light doors have one undivided panel of glass. Doors with
divided lights have smaller areas of glass separated by muntins (wood
or metal bars).

In true divided lights, the small panels are actually separate
pieces of glass. This may be the most authentic-looking option, but the
style is prone to leakage and many manufacturers no longer offer it. An
alternative is simulated divided lights, which mimic the traditional
look while maximizing energy efficiency. Simulated divided lights may
have snap-in grilles on the insides of the door or permanently attached
muntins on both the interior and exterior. If you’re ordering
double-paned glass, manufacturers can insert aluminum, wood, or plastic
spacer bars or grilles between the panes of glass.

When deciding between single or divided lights, consider the style
of your home. Traditional wooden divided lights may look strange on a
sleek modern house. For such a house, steel or aluminum doors with
undivided expanses of glass may be a better choice.

In-swinging or out-swinging doors

The majority of manufacturers now offer both in-swinging and
out-swinging French doors. The decision to choose between them is
usually dictated by location. “An outside-opening door is often a lot
nicer because it doesn’t take up so much space on the inside. But for
protection from the weather, it’s especially important that such doors
be covered by overhangs,” says architect Karl G. Smith, of San
Francisco.

“They’re still not the dominant design, but out-swinging French
doors are much more prevalent than they were several years ago,” says
Alan Campbell, president of the Window & Door Manufacturers
Association. This is due in large part to new hardware and hinging
devices that make out-swinging doors more watertight.

Installation

Leakage and warping must also be taken into account when you’re
ready to install (or have installed) a set of French doors.
Do-it-yourself installation in a new opening can be risky because
cutting through the wall may create waterproofing problems. “Sometimes
the waterproofing membrane in a wall is so brittle that it falls apart
and needs to be replaced,” says contractor Michael Muscardini of
Creative Spaces in Oakland, California. A qualified contractor will
anticipate such problems.

To protect against leakage, look for doors with multipoint locking
systems (pinned at the top, bottom, and center) that will keep them
square and thus watertight. Also ask for factory-installed
weather-stripping, which is available on most doors. If you decide to
install French doors yourself, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s
instructions. “Sometimes people will buy a prepackaged wood door, and
then if it doesn’t fit, they’ll start to cut away at it. What they
don’t realize is they’re removing preservative that keeps the wood from
warping,” says building code consultant Julie Ruth of JRuth Codes
Consulting in Chicago.

Custom doors

Every manufacturer has a menu of available doors and options. This
menu is not uniform within the industry Some offer a wide variety of
sizes and types as standard doors, which are usually in stock and
available for immediate purchase. If you want a size or type not
available in the manufacturer’s inventory, it can often be ordered, but
delivery may take longer. Other manufacturers make all of their doors
to order. If you are considering an unusual size or material, you may
want to go with a manufacturer that custom-makes all of its doors. As a
general rule, if you want a door to be more than 4 feet wide or 8 feet
tall, you will need a custom door.

What Makes Sliding Patio Doors Different

Primarily,
patio doors have been recently created and established significant
trademark and distinction over those standardized entry doors. These
sliding patio doors are considered to have shiny surface that will
expand the perspectives and views while streaming interior space with
the natural and sophisticated light and style whether in a complex or
simplest form and pattern.

There are various products and merchandises that would incorporate
different mechanisms in terms of multiple point locks designed for
better safety, protection and refrain from leakages. In fact, as for
the records, it has been widely used and put up in various domiciles in
different places or communities.

Meanwhile, sliding and hinged patio doors are the two basic kinds of
such. Both have similarities and distinctions particularly in their
sets of features and designs.

First, the sliding patio doors are highly recommended for view
maximizing and daylight. These are consisted of more than two separate
panels, which are merged with permanent sections and boards. Such
sliding panels would establish extra dramatic effects on their surfaces
being glazed or shiny. Panel slides must be parallel to the wall so
such do not obstruct with furniture positions and even the indoors and
outdoors.

On the other hand, hinged patio doors function merely like standard
entry doors. Though they are entirely glazed and most of the times,
they are hung in pairs. Selecting sliding patio doors frequently comes
to a substance of artistry over energy-competence. These individual
panels are obviously narrower and more aesthetically obstructive.
Hence, such sliding doors are more spacious and open themselves to
wider openings.

Moreover, sliding patio doors have different sizes, colors,
finishes, frames, profiles and styles. Such configurations may have
additional considerations like combinations of permanent, sliding and
hinged panels. Patio doors manufacturers and builders have to be extra
careful when purchasing such products. Definitely, they have to be much
aware with several considerations and characteristics – flexibility,
affordability, durability and protection.

Such panel or door installation issues are sought to be somehow
critical. Ask the help or assistance of only those who are certified to
install and put up such panels or doors.

Many manufacturers do insist that there should always be an
experienced helper or expert, a professional installer and a highly
skilled contractor. This is to make advantage of their technical
support and instructions. Patio door installations may take some time
and require efforts and expertise to refrain from further problems and
casualties.

Patio Door Security

Patio
door security is not reliable in and of itself, however, it is not hard
to make your patio door more secure, in fact there is a very easy way
to do so and that is with a security bar. We have all seen them, the
broken off broom handle placed in the patio door runners to keep
someone from being able to open the door without removing the broom
handle first.

While this seems rudimentary, and almost archaic, it is wise, as
six out of ten burglaries, begin with entry through the back of the
house. Three out of ten require no force at all; they are through open
doors and windows! Thus, by even using a very archaic method to better
secure your doors, you significantly reduce your chances of being
burglarized etc. If you watch television you know that by breaking
glass you not only have the problem of noise, but you also have the
problem with DNA testing if blood is left at the scene. Thus, breaking
in by literally breaking, does not happen much more. So, having some
sort of patio door security besides the flimsy door lock is a great
idea!

The locks that come as a basic with patio doors are generally put
together with materials that are soft and brittle. Most will snap off
or break if put under pressure. So, the best way to improve the patio
door security in your home is to add additional and also visible locks.
If you want the best patio door security possible, then look for a
security bar with a patented locking device that can withstand up to
1,000 pounds of force. Look for patio door security bars, and make sure
they have features that also prevent thieves from lifting the door off
the track.

Why would you want to have your patio door security be visible?
Well, for one, if a burglar can see how secure the door is, they are
less likely to damage it at all in an attempt to get in. many times
they can see that their feat is hopeless, and they may not even try to
begin with.

It makes sense to add additional locks as they are relatively
inexpensive, do not take much time or effort to fit to your patio door,
and are generally not much of a hassle, and are easy to operate; thus,
your life becomes more secure, and you do not have any inconvenience.

Part of your patio door security is for your own security, you will
need to have quick and easy ways out, not just in, so if you have patio
door security that that requires a key, it would be wise to keep the
key near the lock, but hidden from outside view. This will mean that
should you need to exit your home quickly, you won’t have to search for
a key, or break glass, but simply leave quickly.

Another form of patio door security is found in the glass. You can
improve security not just with a security bar, but also by replacing
single glazed glass with polycarbonate or wire-embedded glass.

Another problem with patio door security is that often the glass is
not broken or whatnot, but the door is actually lifted right off the
track. Drive a screw into the top of the upper track to keep thieves
from lifting the door off the track.

How To Replace The Rollers On Your Patio Door

Have
you noticed your patio door is getting harder and harder to open? Maybe
it’s time to change the rollers on the door. They generally last from
ten to fifteen years but they do wear out and its a job that a
do-it-yourselfer can accomplish with a little advice and some strong
arms to get the door out!

Sliding patio doors are usually aluminum but there are many wooden
and vinyl models on the market. All of them use ball bearing rollers to
slide easily back and forth. The aluminum and some vinyl doors have a
door bottom that is held in place by 2 screws on either side of the
door near the bottom. Beneath the screw is usually an open hole in
which there is an adjusting screw to raise the roller up and down. The
wooden doors often have pairs of rollers due to their extra weight. The
adjusting screws are accesible through plastic caps covering holes in
the front of the door bottom.

I mention the adjusting screws because you need to check them before
deciding to pull the door out and replace the rollers. Slide a big flat
blade screwdriver underneath the door on one side and lift slightly to
remove the weight from the roller. Use another screwdriver to turn the
adjustment screw. See if that makes the door slide better.

Sometimes thats all thats necessary but if the adjusting screws wont
turn or are totally missing, you will have to lift the door out of its
track and remove the large screws holding the door bottom on and pull
the door bottom off. Get help to lift the door out. Two people are
needed to safely handle even the smaller patio doors. The door bottom
may not pull off easily especially if the door is old. Check for any
metal tabs that may be holding it on and gently work the bottom off.

Some old aluminum and vinyl patio doors have rollers that use one
screw both to mount the roller and to adjust it. These types of rollers
can often be changed without removing the bottom of the door. Look
carefully at the bottom of the door in case there is room to pull the
roller assembly out.

Wooden patio door rollers are somewhat easier to change, although
the door itself is much heavier. The rollers are often screwed in to
the wood door bottom. Remove the screws, and out come the roller.

Some Vinyl patio doors are glued together. They were never intended
to come apart. You may not be able to remove the rollers if you see no
visible screws holding the frame together. Also vinyl doors are often
brittle with age and crack easily as you try to pry off the door
bottom. Take extra care if you have a vinyl patio door.

Once you have the bottom off the patio door it should be easy to see
how the rollers are held in. Usually, removing one screw or bending a
metal tab is all thats necessary. Remove the rollers and take them with
you to your local glass shop to get the proper replacements.

To reassemble everything start by adjusting the new rollers so they
are up as high as they can go. You dont want them getting in the way
when you reinstall the door on its track. Make sure you cover the
roller retaining screws with cork or rubber if they come near the bare
glass in the door bottom. If the metal screws touch the glass, it will
crack.

Replace the door bottom, reinstall the screws that secure it and
lift the door back in to place. Follow the instructions gave earlier
for adjusting the rollers. You should now be able to see the door move
up and down when you turn the adjusting screws. You will also be able
to align the door with the frame using the screws. Your patio door lock
may need to be adjusted to compensate for the new door height.

Try the door and you should be amazed at how easy it is to close. It
should only require a couple of pounds of force to open and close. No
more fighting with a heavy door and you did it all yourself!

Double Glazed Patio Doors

In
many modern homes, the largest window in the house isn’t a window. It’s
the sliding door that affords access to the patio or deck in the back.
Sliding patio doors became popular in the 1970s, just about the time
that double glazing came into popularity as a means of controlling
energy costs and heat loss. By using double glazed windows in the door,
the use of sliding patio doors became an energy conscious decision.

Double glazed patio doors sandwich a layer of air or inert gas
between two layers of glass. The layers are separated by a ’spacer’
that holds them from 12-26mm apart, and seals the perimeter between the
two to prevent moisture and condensation from compromising the lowered
heat conductivity. The use of double glazed windows rather than a
single pane of glass can reduce the heat lost through a window by as
much as 50%.

The classic double glazed patio door consists of two large double
glazed windows hung from a set of rollers in a channel, and set into a
sliding channel at the bottom. Most of the older ones are framed in
aluminum for strength - the size of the windows makes frame strength a
priority. As it comes time to replace many of the doors that were first
installed in the 1970s and 1980s, many people are opting to remove the
channel and sliders in favor of more attractive French doors.

Replacing worn patio sliding doors with new double glazed patio
doors offers numerous advantages. First, both the materials and the
manufacturing process for making double glazed windows have advanced
considerably in the intervening 35 or so years. The new generation of
double glazed patio doors is far more effective at insulating your home
and reducing heat loss through the glass. The use of PVCu in frames
makes for far lighter doors than either aluminum or wood, and PVCu has
better insulating properties than aluminum. I have rather vivid
memories of the frost forming along the top and sides of the aluminum
frame of our patio doors when I was a child. PVUc frames make that a
thing of the past.

Besides better framing material, the glass itself has changed
considerably. Today, you can choose low-e glass for your double glazed
patio door. The coating on the inside of the glass substantially
reduces heat transfer between the inside and the outside. The use of a
desiccant in the sealing strip spacer between the panes in double
glazed windows is another innovation that helps create a more durable
window. By completely drying the air between the two panes,
manufacturers reduce the likelihood of moisture condensing inside the
window. Finally, by choosing double glazed patio doors that are filled
with argon or another inert gas rather than air you lower the heat
conductivity of the windows still further.

If you choose to replace your old sliding patio door with a new
French window, there are some marvelous new innovations. Look for
folding double glazed patio doors that can be used to replace entire
walls, French doors with headers and side rails, or French doors with
fanlights and mullions that add style and elegance to most any facade.

Patio doors are doors that lead out from a room onto a patio area. These doors can help brighten up a room by letting more sunlight into the room. There are several different types of patio doors, some of which are described below.

French-Style Patio Doors

French-style patio doors are popular because they are attractive and allow a lot of light into a room. French doors can also have decorative patterns cut into the glass for an elegant touch. Depending upon the size of the room in which the patio door is being used, different styles of French doors may be used.

If the room area is fairly big, French-style patio doors that swing inward may be used. Alternatively, sliding French-style patio doors may be used. Or, if the room is somewhat small, bi-fold French patio doors can be installed. Bi-fold patio doors have a hinge in between the two door panels so that the doors can slide open while folding on top of one another.

French-style patio doors are very pretty, but they can also be somewhat expensive. Additionally, if the house settles a bit, the joint where the doors meet each other may become out of alignment. This makes it difficult for the doors to latch properly and block outside air.

Sliding Patio Doors

Sliding patio doors generally cost less than French doors and are easily adjusted if they become out of alignment. For these reasons, sliding doors are good choices for patio doors.

Vinyl Patio Doors

Vinyl patio doors do a good job at insulating a room or home, but they do crack fairly easily.

Aluminum Patio Doors

Aluminum patio doors do not insulate very well and paint comes off of them easily.

Wooden Patio Doors

Not only do wooden patio doors insulate well, but they also look great and are very easy to take care of.

Selecting Patio Doors

When choosing a patio door, it is important to select one that is appropriate for the area's weather and climate. Harsh winters will require thermally insulated glass. Also, special coatings can be applied to the glass to help limit the passage of heat. This helps keep rooms cooler during the summer months and warmer during the winter months. It's also important to choose high-qualify sealing material and to make sure that the weather stripping is very durable, as this protects your room and home from the elements. It is also important to make sure that any screen or insect doors are sealed tightly as well.

Installing Patio Doors

Installing patio doors is not an easy task, and in most cases a professional should be consulted. Doing so ensures that the doors will be properly installed and that any insulation problems are taken care of.

A sliding glass door is a great addition to let in more light and air or as eye-catching access to a deck or garden. Here's how to make it as easy as possible.

Prepping the Existing Wall

Instructions

STEP 1: Choose the site for your new door. Inspect both sides of the wall and from the attic and basement to make sure there are no heating ducts or other hidden problems with the site. Try to avoid all electrical and plumbing fixtures.

STEP 2: Mark out the door dimensions on the wall, allowing an extra 4 inches on each side to allow for double jack studs (see glossary) and shim space and an extra 7 inches on top to allow for a header (see glossary) and shim space.

STEP 3: Turn off the electricity for this area at the breaker or fuse box to protect yourself from shocks.

STEP 4: Put down dropcloths or plastic sheeting. Have trash containers ready.

STEP 5: Carefully remove all the wall covering inside the borders you marked. Do this by cutting and chipping away plaster or drywall by hand or using power tools. Go slowly to avoid damaging any electrical or plumbing set-ups in the wall.

STEP 6: Remove all insulation, dirt and debris as you work.

STEP 7: Drill marker holes through to the far wall; pencil in lines that show exactly where to remove the wall covering on that wall.

STEP 8: Carefully remove the wall covering on the far wall.

STEP 9: Determine at this point how advanced your skills are with electricity and plumbing. If you have any doubts at all, call in professional help to re-route anything in the way of your new door.

Tips & Warnings

Working with small sections of the wall at a time makes the mess easier to contain.

Use a dust mask and safety goggles during this phase of the operation.

Removing the Old Studs

Instructions

STEP 1: Be sure to heed these important precautionary steps!

STEP 2: Get a friend to help with the heavy lifting involved here.

STEP 3: Take this step seriously: Brace up the wall you are working on to provide temporary support while the new jack studs and header are put into place.

STEP 4: Make the bracing: Place a 2x6 (at least the length of the new opening you are creating) flat against the ceiling. Place another 2x6 of the same length flat on the floor. Set 2x4 uprights to wedge firmly between the two 2x6 pieces at 2-foot intervals. This brace should be set up no more than 2 feet away from the wall you're working on.

STEP 5: Make sure you have solved any problems with plumbing, electrical or any other obstacles within the perimeter of your door opening - either by fixing them yourself or having a professional do it.

STEP 6: Cut the old studs across the top at the same height as the opening using either a hand saw or power tool.

STEP 7: Pry each stud loose at the bottom of the wall. Set them aside; sometimes they can be used in the reconstruction process.

STEP 8: Remove the bottom plate - the 2x4 or 2x6 that runs along the floor that all the studs sit on. Cut on a line even with the sides of the opening and then pry the piece up from the floor (it will be nailed or screwed down).

STEP 9: Check the surrounding floor covering - if it's very thick, you may have to chisel carefully through it to get the unwanted piece of plate out and not damage the surrounding floor with a saw.

Tips & Warnings

Once you have removed the old studs, move immediately to the next step of putting the new header in place.

Building the Opening and Installing the Door

Instructions

STEP 1: Make new full-length studs that will fit against the outside of the studs at each edge of your opening. These can be wiggled into place and attached from inside the opening you have in the wall. (We suggest using 2½-inch decking screws and drilling with a screwdriver bit for this rough-in construction phase. It causes less vibration and possible damage to poorly secured wall coverings.)

STEP 2: Cut two pieces of 2x6 the same length as the width of your opening. Find something ½-inch thick to use as a spacer between the two pieces and then nail them together like a sandwich (2x6 - spacer - 2x6). Make sure all edges are even and flush. This makes the header the same width as the 2x6 studs and makes applying new wall covering much easier.

STEP 3: Fit this header tightly against the bottom of the exposed studs that were just cut off. Secure it lightly in place so that you can get the measurements for your jack studs to fit under each end of the header. (We suggest using 2½-inch decking screws and a screwdriver bit here as well.)

STEP 4: Cut the jack studs to fit tightly between the floor and the bottom of the new header.

STEP 5: Wedge them in place and secure the new full studs to the studs, header and the floor. In the case of a header this wide, it is a good idea to use "double" jack studs, so just cut two more and attach them directly against the first set of jack studs on each side and to the floor and header.

STEP 6: Attach the header to each of the cut studs above. The opening is now complete and ready to have the door installed and the finish work done to the wall.

STEP 7: Installing a sliding glass door is accomplished very much the same way as a single width, pre-hung exterior door only on a larger scale.

STEP 8: Assemble the unit if it doesn't come pre-assembled.

STEP 9: Set the unit in place from the outside of the structure.

STEP 10: Get the unit roughly into position as far as being flush with the wall lines both inside and out. Also make sure that the unit is centered in the opening. You can now mark any carpeting to be removed so that a level, tight, weatherproof seal can be made. For ceramic tile or a hardwood surface, it is easier to build up under the sliding door threshold to bring it to floor level than to remove the flooring.

STEP 11: Remove the unit and ready the floor, doing any cutting or building up that is needed.

STEP 12: Run several heavy beads of silicon caulk along the area to be covered by the unit's threshold.

STEP 13: Set the unit back into position and keep it in place by using a few screws through the threshold into the floor.

STEP 14: Use a carpenter's level and square to shim the unit into place all along the sides and top. Once the sliding door unit has been secured, go back and put screws in each of the provided holes. Remember not to overtighten as it can warp the framework and make for a poor door-to-frame seal.

STEP 15: The project is now ready to have the walls patched and finished and the trim applied. The temporary bracing system may now be removed.

Tips & Warnings

If possible, remove the "sliding" glass half of the unit to make it easier and lighter to work with.

This article is going to be about replacing an old sliding glass door with a modern Vinyl frame sliding glass door. If you currently have french doors and you want to replace them with sliding doors, or vise versa, future articles will cover that topic.

The first thing we have to do is measure for the replacement door. You want to measure across the bottom, center, and top of the existing door frame to find the narrowest dimension. Start outside and measure at the point where the old door frame stops and the exterior material starts. That material can be stucco, siding, or brick. Measure across in the 3 places: bottom, center, and top. Record the smallest dimension. Then go inside and do the same thing. You want to measure where the frame ends and the drywall, plaster, or sheetrock begins. Take all six measurements, find the narrowest one, and deduct 3/4". That is the width of the new door. Now, when you measure the height, you can do it just on the outside. Measure the left, center, and right side from the ground where the bottom track sits, up to the top where the old frame ends and the exterior material begins. Take the narrowest dimension and deduct 1/2". That is your height of the new door. Then, determine which side the sliding panel should be on. The fixed panel is designated by the letter "O", and the slider is an "X". In most areas of the country, you call it out by looking at the door from outside and reading left to right. So, if you were outside looking at your door, and you want the sliding panel to close to the right wall, you would ask for an "OX". However, because i have recently discovered that not all parts of the country do it this way, my suggestion is to ask the dealer how they read the opening before placing your order.

Next, you have to decide whether you want a retrofit frame or a replacement frame. If the old frame is flush with the exterior material, such as in the case of stucco, then you want to get the retrofit frame, which comes with the outside fin. That will eliminate the need to trim the outside. If you have brick or siding surrounding the opening, then you need to get a replacement frame and trim the outside yourself. You can use wood, vinyl, or other composite materials available in most major hardware store chains. You also need to measure the depth of the old frame. The majority of vinyl replacement doors have a frame depth of 4 3/4". Most door openings, when framed, have a depth of 5 1/2" to the innermost surface of the wall, whether it's drywall, plaster, or whatever else. Therefore, when you install the new door, you will need to add some sort of trim product to build the inside of the door frame so it is flush with the wall surface. We sell vinyl extrusions specifically for this purpose. It's a two piece system that allows you to bring the frame flush with the wall, then apply the molding to the wall and door frame to finish it. Pictures and descriptions of the products are available by going to http://www.how-to-install-windows.com and clicking on "shop".
In addition to any trim needed, you are also going to need caulk, a roll of R-13 Insulation, liquid nails for the track, 4" deck screws, shims, dust masks, and safety glasses. Once the new door arrives, it will be time to take out the old door.

Vinyl Siding - Adding Value to Your Home

Many homeowners today want to increase the value of their home. When you want to sell your home, the first things that you think of are remodeling the inside and replacing the carpet. However, have you thought about adding vinyl siding to the outside of your home?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Vinyl siding seals homes against water damage while making the house look great. Vinyl siding is also easy to clean with a pressure washer. Vinyl siding costs depends on the color and style that you pick. There are many colors to choose from and they will raise the value of your home.

There are blues, creams, browns, and reds. Each color will add to the value of your home, however, choosing light colors that appeal to more will help sell your home. A darker vinyl siding color will make the house look small and unwelcoming, whereas warmer, brighter colors will make your house look larger and more welcoming.

No matter how small your house may look, using a bright color will help to make it look bigger. The most popular vinyl siding colors are the light browns and creams. These colors seem to be the ones that are making houses with vinyl siding more popular to buy. Another thing besides color is the vinyl siding cost. Costs for vinyl siding can vary depending on the brand, style, and color of the siding that is chosen.

The most expensive form of vinyl siding these days is the new vertical siding. Vertical vinyl siding, just like horizontal siding, will help keep the home safe from water damage. Vertical siding is also easier to clean. This is what makes it so special and somewhat more expensive. Vinyl siding, in itself, is easy to clean and maintain. A simple spray down with a pressure washer, or a quick wash and rinse with soap and a hose will help to keep the vinyl siding looking clean and new. The nicer the siding looks and the newer it is, the more value your home will have.

Remember to compare vinyl siding costs before you choose your color and style, and remember that vinyl siding doesn’t just add value to your home, it will make your home look and feel new again.

A low maintenance and durable material, vinyl siding is an increasingly popular home exterior. Even though it is a low maintenance material, you will still want to clean your vinyl siding from time to time. Just make sure you know about the best cleaning methods before you get started.

Simple maintenance cleaning of your vinyl siding is fairly straightforward. Use a long-handled brush with soft bristles or a soft cloth to wipe it down with soap and water. If your vinyl siding has textured surfaces to it, you will want to use only the brush with soft bristles so as to avoid wiping stains into the grooves with a cloth.

Start with the vinyl siding at the bottom of your house and work your way up. This will help to prevent streaking from the soapy water running down your house. If you have other materials, such as brick, on parts of your home, cover them so that runoff from your vinyl siding will not affect it. Lastly, always make sure you rinse the area before the cleaning solution dries.

If you want to speed the process of cleaning your vinyl siding along, you can buy or rent a power washer. First of all, however, make sure you have read the instructions on the power washer thoroughly. Second, always make sure you use the power washer at eye level. If you try to point upward, you may end up with water and cleaning solution behind the vinyl siding. These can later leak and cause streaks that can eventually lead to decay.

From time to time, you may find spots of mold or mildew on your vinyl siding. If these spots are small, then you can simply use a name brand household cleaner. Just always be sure to test it on a small portion of your vinyl siding in an inconspicuous place to make sure it will not damage it at all.

If, however, the spots of mold or mildew are a little larger, you can use a solution of 30% vinegar and 70% water. Another common homemade solution is mixture of powdered laundry detergent, powdered household cleaner, liquid bleach, and water. It is best to just find the one that is most convenient and effective for you.

Not all vinyl siding stains, however, are mold or mildew. You may end up with dirt, soot, or even animal stains on the outside of your home. If that is the case, there are a number of general cleaners that are approved for use on vinyl siding. Check your local store for simple household cleaners, and then read the containers carefully to find out if they are effective and safe for use on vinyl siding and specifically on whatever the stain is that you have found on your vinyl siding.

Increasingly, vinyl siding is a common home exterior. It is low maintenance, attractive, and easy to install. You may, though, from time to time need to clean your vinyl siding in order to keep it in good working condition. Before you do, make sure you understand what is necessary and what the proper procedure is so that your vinyl siding will look good and last a long time.
