Love The Beauty And Simplicity Of A Vinyl Window

The home of your dreams, whether an old colonial style or a rambling
ranch, more than likely needs some updating. A great way to quickly and
easily update your older style home is to replace the existing windows
with vinyl replacement windows. A vinyl window is basically maintenance
free, simply to clean, and adds beauty to just about any home.

Here's why you may consider replacing your windows.

Generally, in an older home, the window frames rot and warp over-time,
his is just a fact due to time. As well, though they were probably once
sealed, very likely that seal has worn, leaving way for water to seep
through flaky caulking. This then allows for the wood so soak up the
water and warp or rot. This leads for the most part for terrible
insulation, and easy escapes for air.

Your best bet therefore is vinyl replacement windows. They will not
warp or rot, and since there's no paint, it cannot peel. Basically you
only need to clean them. A company like Pella Window will help you
choose which window is best for you, and have a wide variety of vinyl
windows to choose from.

Installing these windows is a fairly easy task, and anybody who's
little handy with tools can easily take this on. You can easily learn
to complete this task and install your vinyl replacement windows.

What you'll need to do first is remove the old window. Cut out any
remaining caulking seal with a utility knife, scraping along the
perimeter of the window ledge. After doing this you'll want to get help
to push the window either in our out with some consistent gentle
pressure.

When the old window is out, then you'll have to clean up the area that
surrounds the window box by scraping any old paint or extra debris.

Next you'll have to double-check your measurements. Square up any
lopsidedness with shims. This is an extra step, yet it will make the
window fit much better.

Now the windows will be secured by your screws. Last, you'll just caulk the edges sealing them tightly.

Now that your windows are in, caring for them is simple. You just have
to wash your windows. This is made even easier because the way that the
windows tilt inward, it's very easy to clean the outside from the
inside. This makes it even more convenient if you're living on a second
floor.

By the way, these new windows of yours are double paned and insulated,
therefore you won't need the storm windows that came with the old ones.

Vinyl replacement windows leave no down side and they add a refreshing
beauty to your home, while being virtually maintenance free. You really
can't go wrong.

About the Author

There
are millions of homes that have white vinyl windows and people feel as
though they are stuck with the white color on these units. This can
make updating the color schemes on your home very difficult, because
you think you have to plan around keeping your white windows. These
white windows can, in fact, be coated with proper high-tech coatings
that do change their color and do stick to the vinyl. Of course there are vinyl window colors other than white, and they can be coated and changed also.

Product selection is the biggest factor when coating vinyl windows.
There are a lot of paint-type products on the market. Many of these paint
products will just sit on the surface and not bond to the vinyl. It is
important to understand a product prior to using it. There are a lot of
claims made by companies that they just can’t stand behind.

So what should you look for in a vinyl coating? The product must
penetrate into the surface of the vinyl and bond to the PVC-U
substrate. If the product is lying on top of the vinyl, it will not
stay there no matter what claims are made. The product must be UV
resistant and heat reflective. You do not want the sun
to break down the coating as this will result in peeling, chipping and
fading. If it is not heat reflective then it will fade and look old
much before it’s time. Look for a product that has been in service for
many years and has a proven track record.

Why Should You Choose Vinyl Vertical Slider Windows?

Vinyl vertical slider windows remain popular because they are easy to
install and easy to use. Since the window frames are made of vinyl,
they are durable and easy to maintain. Homeowners can clean them by
using soap and water.

Along with being easy to maintain, they are also
affordable. The cost of vinyl vertical slider windows the average price
ranges from $100 to $200 per window. If homeowners would like
additional specialty features or unique shapes, the price can increase
to upwards of $500 plus.

Home Improvement With UPVC Windows

		 UPVC
windows can be the ideal way to make a good impression when people
visit your home. You can choose from sash windows or casement windows
and have a range of features. Here are some reasons why PVC may be the
right material for your new house windows.

PVC, called vinyl in North America, is a strong and durable material
and it has become a popular choice for modern windows and doors. Most
people now replace old house windows with UPVC windows and may include
those as part of a package to modernise the house, with doors and a
conservatory also included.

There are several reasons to install windows of PVC when considering
home improvement projects. The fact that they are weathertight is a
major factor when remodelling. Double glazed UPVC windows consist of a
membrane between two sheets of glass (hence the alternative term
'double glass windows'). This protects against heat loss and means that
your heating bills will be lower once your new windows have been
installed.

These
windows also have security features such as a tight locking mechanism
which makes them harder to break into than traditional windows – at
least if it's a question of picking the lock. And many modern vinyl
windows can be left ajar in the locked position so you can have both
airflow and security.

When it comes to choosing new windows for your home, PVC or vinyl wins
out over wood in many ways. In addition to the additional insulation
that such windows provide, PVC requires considerably less maintenance
than wood. There's no need to sand and paint every couple of years.
Instead, soap and water should maintain a good finish for a decade or
more.

One of the
choices you will face when deciding on new windows for your home is the
type of window you should select. These are likely to be either sash or
casement. Sash windows are the windows that slide up and down and may
have a locking mechanism at the top of the sash. Some sash windows are
single, sliding one way only, while others are double, with both top
and bottom panes able to move.

Casement windows are popular when it comes to UPVC windows. These are
the windows that are hinged on the side and open inwards or outwards.
Sometimes these windows can swing in several directions, to allow a
fire exit or to increase the flow of air. Many companies that
specialise in windows offer casement windows.

There are other options for using windows to dress up your home. In
sunny areas, consider a slight tint to reduce the glare while keeping
the light flowing in. You could also consider stained glass panels or
leading to make your house windows stand out. And don't forget that you
can also include clear or frosted glass panels at the side of a window
fitting. Although these will not open, they will increase the amount of
light coming into a room and make it a bright and pleasant environment.
Whether you go for sash windows or casement windows, UPVC windows will
be a beautiful and energy saving addition to your home.

by ADRIAN JONES

First,
we have the new construction frame with the nailing fin. If you choose
to go this route, you have to remove the exterior around each window
opening, pull out the nails holding the aluminum window to the studs,
nail in the new vinyl window, apply flashing, caulk, and re-install the
exterior around each window. In addition to being a whole lot of labor,
you can run into major problems trying to install the exterior product
around each window opening. If your home has stucco, you have to try
and match the rest of the stucco. It can be done, but not by you. Even
most professional stucco guys can’t get a perfect match. What if you
have wood siding? Well, you can cut away 2″ of the siding around each
window to get to the nail fin, then you can apply 1 X 2 or 1 X 3 trim
around each window. Certainly not as much work as the stucco home, but
probably more work than the average homeowner cares to tackle. What if
each window is surrounded by brick? Let’s not even go there! You would
have to remove the bricks, then re-install them all when finished.

Trust me, you don’t want to replace your old aluminum windows with
new construction vinyl windows. You want to use either the replacement
frame like the one used to replace the wood sash windows, or something
called a retrofit frame , that is popular in the west where stucco is a
common exterior. Since the procedure for measuring is the same
regardless of the frame style chosen, this article will discuss the
proper measuring procedure, and future articles will explain the
difference in the installation process for replacement versus retrofit.

If you look at the portion of the aluminum frame that goes around
the window opening into your surrounding walls, you will see three
separate “legs” that form two pockets. The outside leg and the center
leg form the first pocket. Your screen and stationary panel will be in
this pocket. The center leg and inside leg form the second pocket, and
your sliding panel is in that pocket. Find the “leg” that is the widest
on all four sides. When measuring the width, run your tape measure from
the widest leg on the left to the widest leg on the right. This should
be the narrowest measurement. Then, subtract 3/8″ from that
measurement. This is the width of the replacement window. Measure the
height the same way. When measuring the height, measure as close to the
center of the window as possible. This is especially important on
windows wider than six feet, because the top wood header has a tendency
to sag over time, making the center of the opening the narrowest.

You don’t need to deduct 3/8″ from the height like you did on the
width. 1/4″ is fine. These are the dimensions you use when ordering
your vinyl window. If you have any picture windows(windows without a
vent panel), there will only be two legs and one pocket. You still
measure the same way.

Installing Vinyl Replacement Windows On the Second Floor

Sometimes
we get so busy in our lives that we forget how fortunate we all are to
live in the greatest country on this earth. Those brave men and women
in our armed forces make it possible, so keep them in your thoughts and
prayers.

If you have a two story house, and you are going to replace the
windows on both the first and second floor, there are little tricks
that you can use to make the upper floor job a bit safer and easier. If
the windows are replacement style frames, you install them from inside
the house, so the only thing that you will do different than the first
floor windows is to use an extension ladder to caulk the exterior. So,
let’s talk about doing retrofit style windows on the second floor. You
can usually remove the old window from inside the house, but if you
have a picture window, you have to use the extension ladder to remove
the stops holding the glass in place. Then, you can go inside the house
and cut the glass free from the frame using a utility knife. Put a tarp
on the ground below the window, to catch any glass pieces that may fall
during the removal. Also, don’t forget to keep people and animals away
from the area below the window.

Once you are ready to install the new window, you can do it from
inside the house. Remember, when installing retrofit style frames, you
install them from outside and raise them into place. Instead, carry the
window upstairs. If it’s a slider, remove the screen and sliding panel.
Then, using a helper, you can angle the window frame through the
opening, extending the retrofit lip completely outside of the opening
before pulling the window back toward you, and installing the window as
if you were outside. Have your helper hold the center bar while you put
a screw into the top center to hold the frame in place. You can do the
entire installation from inside. The only time you will need to go on
the extension ladder is when you’re ready to caulk the exterior. Make
sure you put a generous amount of caulk where the top of the frame
meets the stucco or exterior material. You don’t want any water getting
past the new frame, otherwise it can work it’s way through the wall and
down through the ceiling or the walls. You would be surprised how
easily two people can install an 8′ wide by 5′ tall sliding window on
the second floor if you remove the sliding panels and screens. In fact,
my helper and I did one 10′ wide and 5′ high. That was the biggest one
I ever did on the second floor. You can run a bead of caulk on the
outside face of the old frame before installing the new frame right
from inside the room.

Now, if you are installing a picture window, it’s a little tougher.
You can’t remove any panels to lighten the load, and it’s tougher to
get as firm a grip on the frame. But, on the positive side, picture
windows aren’t usually much larger than 3′ by 5′ on the second floor.
If you have a large picture window, or if you have several to install,
I have access to suction cups that are used in the glass industry. You
can attach them to the glass and use them as handles when extending the
frame outside through the opening. Contact me on my website at How to
install windows if you want to get pricing on suction cups. You can get
the smaller, inexpensive models for around $40 each.

So, if you are hesitating to replace your old windows yourself
because you didn’t think you could do the upstairs windows, now you
know you can. Next week’s topic is going to be about replacing the
rollers on your patio door. If you can’t hardly open your sliding glass
door anymore, a couple of new rollers can make all the difference in
the world.

How To Measure For Residential Vinyl Windows

Let’s
say you’re tired of those old wood windows, and you decide it’s time to
upgrade to vinyl replacement windows. You get 2 or 3 contractors to
come out and give you an estimate. After they leave, you can’t believe
windows can cost so much. I mean, having to get financing to replace
your windows just doesn’t seem right. Let me explain to you why the
windows are so expensive. You have to pay the salary of the salesman
who comes over to give you your “free” estimate. Then, you have to pay
the salary of the installers. Finally, you have to pay the owner of the
company. In some cases there is a broker who acts as a middleman, and
he or she gets a cut too. No wonder you need financing! Now, imagine if
you already knew how to shop for windows, how to measure for new
windows, how to remove the old windows, and how to install the new
windows. You just eliminated everybody except the owner. All of a
sudden you can afford to replace your windows without taking out a
loan! The next few articles are going to cover this process. This
article is going to discuss the proper way to measure for your double
hung replacement windows.

It’s important to properly measure for your windows. If you order
them too small, you’re going to end up having to improvise in order to
get them to work. Even if you do get them to work, you’re probably
going to have problems. And if you order them too big, you’re really in
trouble. Chances are you will be ordering more windows. So, measuring
is very important. Fortunately, it’s also very simple. We are dealing
with old double hung wood windows here, so if that doesn’t apply to
you, don’t worry. Future articles will discuss other types of windows.
In the case of the wood sash windows, you want to measure the width
first, and height second. When you go shopping for windows, always give
the dimensions as WIDTH X HEIGHT. To measure your width, you want to
pull a tape measure from the top right corner to the top left corner.
Put the tape measure in that 1 1/2″ pocket where the window frame
slides. Measure to the sixteenth of an inch. Do the same thing at about
the midway point, right above where the window locks. Then, raise the
bottom sash and take the same measurement at the bottom. If you can’t
raise the window for whatever reason, go outside and measure from
there. You will have to remove the screen though.

The majority of the time all three of those measurements will be the
same. If they’re not the same, use the SMALLEST measurement. Now
subtract 1/4″ from that measurement. This is your width for the new
window. The height is a bit tricky. If your window sill outside slopes
downward for water drainage, you have to make sure that you measure
from the HIGHEST Point of the sill. You want to measure from the top
right corner to the bottom right corner. Put your tape at the top where
the upper sash closes. If the bottom has a 5/8″ high inside wood sill
piece to prevent water from coming inside, you need to raise the bottom
sash and run the tape past the 5/8″ sill and down to the high point of
the sloped sill. Do this in the middle and on the left. Once again,
take the smallest measurement, but this time deduct 3/16″. This is your
height. If you order your windows using these dimensions, they will fit
right in, and leave just enough room to adjust if needed. The final
step is to measure the depth of the pocket where both sashes slide. By
depth, i mean from the point outside where the top sash rests against
the outside wood stop to the point inside where the inside bottom sash
rests against the inside stop. This measurement should be between 3
1/4″- 3 1/2″. The reason you need to know this dimension is because not
all replacement windows have a 3 1/4″ depth frame. You want a
replacement window that’s going to fit right into the existing pocket
of the wood frame. If you purchase a window with a 2 5/8″ frame depth,
you’re going to have approximately 3/4″ to fill. That means buying new
wood stops for the inside of the house that are 3/4″ wider than the
existing stops. Get the 3 1/4″ frames and save yourself a lot of extra
work. Now, if you’re on a really tight budget, the lower grade windows
will be the 2 5/8″ frame, and you will have to get the wider trim. But
that’s something you should weigh in your mind, whether the money saved
on the lesser grade window is worth the extra expense and time of
installing new stops around the inside of all your windows.

So, now you have the measurements and it’s time to go shopping. What
should you look for to know you’re getting quality windows? A top
quality double hung replacement window will have tilt-in sashes that
allow you to clean the outside glass from inside the home. All double
hung windows have a mechanism that keeps the window in the open
position. The better windows use a state of the art mechanism known as
a constant force balance coil. All replacement windows will have double
glazing, meaning there will be two panes of glass in each sash
separated by a 1/2″-5/8″ spacer material around the edge of the unit. A
quality window will use an intercept spacer or something called a super
spacer. Find out the U-Value of the window. The lower the number, the
better insulating properties. You want a window with a U-Value under
.40. There is a special glass called LowE that will lower that U-Value
number. In fact, most quality windows include LowE as standard. Those
are the main things to ask about when window shopping.

On the opposite end of the quality spectrum, you can buy an
economical replacement window that will not have the tilt-in
feature. The mechanism that holds the window open will consist of a
block and tackle assembly made up of a spring and string. Another
mechanism in lower quality windows is called a spiral tube balance.
These lesser grade assemblies are notorious for failing after 5-10
years. The spacer material used on lower quality windows will be
aluminum or something called swiggle seal. And many times the U-Value
of these lower grade windows will be up around .50. The thing to
remember is that a window that uses a super spacer more than likely
isnt going to use a block and tackle balance system. It would be like
buying a new car with leather interior and no power window and door
locks. Follow those guidelines and you will have a good idea what
quality you are buying. Once you make the decision and purchase your
windows, it’s time to get them home and take out your old windows. Next
week I will tell you how to remove the old wood windows..

Vinyl is also a great insulator, and vinyl windows are customizable to
fit nearly any window opening. The Vinyl Windows - Single Units
category on ebuild lists single unit vinyl windows for window applications.

Use the ebuild to narrow down
your search and find single unit vinyl windows that fit the project
requirements. You may choose single unit vinyl windows from listed
manufacturers, including:

Crestline Windows & Doors

Hurd Millwork Co.

JELD-WEN Vinyl Windows

Milgard Windows

Silver Line Windows

Simonton Windows

Superseal Mfg. manufacturers’ characterization of the unit with regard to design,
function, and application, e.g., awning, basement, casement, etc.

A selection in Venting Configuration indicates if the desired unit is to have venting capabilities or is to be stationary - i.e. non-operating.

Nominal Width refers to the measurement across the shortest side of the unit (left to right), expressed in inches.

Jamb Depth refers to the measurement of the width of the frame of the unit from the inside edge to the outside edge, expressed in inches.

A selection in Exterior Color will
narrow down the search by units featuring exterior frames of a specific
color offered by the manufacturer, e.g., beige, bronze, brown, etc.

A selection in Application will indicate if the desired unit is for a new construction project or a replacement project.

A selection in Size Type will indicate if the desired unit is to be stock or custom.

Shape refers to the form of the unit in plain view, e.g., ellipse, elliptical top, half-round, etc.

Nominal Height refers to the measurement across the longest side of the unit (top to bottom), expressed in inches.

Standard Glazing refers to the
treatment and properties of the glass component of the unit with

Vinyl Windows: Not All the Same

Over
50 percent of windows purchased today are vinyl windows. Choosing a
superior vinyl window can be difficult if you don’t know what to look
for. It can prove even more frustrating if you purchase and install
your vinyl windows only to find that they’re poor quality, uneven and
already fading in appearance. You might also face the realization that
a bigger name is not always better and price is only one of several
considerations.

There’s more to choosing and installing vinyl windows than meet the
eye. What’s inside a window is more important than what’s on the
outside since the internal structure determines a window’s longevity.

According to Ernie DeBacco of Visions Windows and Doors, a thicker
window is better. “In general, thicker internal parts result in
longer-lasting quality, greater appeal and little to no maintenance.”

As a homeowner shopping for the best vinyl window, consider these factors in purchasing and making additional upgrades:

- Vinyl: Look at a cutaway view of the window to identify the
quality of the vinyl and the thickness of the window’s components. A
thicker vinyl ensures rigidity and more overall resistance to weather
damage.

- Jambs: The vertical members of the window frame, thicker jambs
provide better overall performance of the operating parts of the window
called the “sash.” Building-grade windows have jambs from 2-7/16 to 3
inches thick, while premium grade windows offer 3-1/4 inch jambs.
Visions’ windows and patio doors, for example, have 3-1/4 inch jambs.

- Fusion-welded frames and sash: Maintaining a window’s square form
helps ensure proper installation, in addition to creating a sharp look.
Fusion-welded frames and sash can make a big difference here; windows
that utilize a four-point welding system for the head, sill and two
side jambs, and for the sash are sturdier and less likely to crack or
break.

- Chambers: These internal cavities within the frames and sash trap
air, which insulates against heat and cold transfer through the window.
Thick, multi-chambered frames and sash greatly improve structural
performance by reducing the amount of seasonal expansion and
contraction. Building-grade vinyl windows generally have two to three
internal chambers whereas premium grades have five, six or seven
chambers offering superior energy efficiency.

- Sloped sill: It’s not the thickness that matters here; instead,
consider the degree of the slope of the window’s sill. Pockets seen on
some vinyl brands will not keep water from collecting inside and
outside of the window. A higher slope will allow for rainwater to hit
the sash and flow downward, away from the window. This prevents water
spots on the glass, and wear and tear on the vinyl.

- Spacers: The material used to join two pieces of glass together to
form a dual-pane (or insulated) window — a spacer’s material
composition will affect air transfer. Metal spacers provide either a
stuffy or chilly atmosphere depending on the season. Non-metallic
spacers minimize the transfer of heat or cold through the window and
minimize condensation on the windows, which is often caused by higher
humidity levels in a home.

- High performance glass: Vinyl windows, in general, are more energy
efficient than wood windows. High performance glass gives homeowners
even greater latitude to keep energy costs down. Visions Windows &
Doors, as an example, offers Zo-e-shield, a glazing system that uses
advanced technology to reduce the amount of heat or cold moving through
a window. It also provides some of the best protection you can find
against fading of home interiors caused by the sun’s rays.

More options are becoming available in the vinyl window market. A
window made up of thicker jambs, more internal chambers, and
fusion-welded frames and sash ensures durability and performance for
all seasons. High performance glass, non-metallic spacers and sloped
sills will contribute to improved comfort and convenience in the home.
If you can’t remember all that, just remember, you can’t judge a window
by its cover.

by ARA

Vinyl windows are not windows made of vinyl. They are most definitely made of glass, but today's windows are much more than just flat pieces of glass. The glass is just one of many components that go into modern windows. It's critical that windows do more than just transmit light, and just as critical that they do not transmit heat, either into the house in warm weather or out when it's cold outside. The glass part of a window can help reduce heat transfer if it is doubled, or even tripled, and separated by spaces filled with inert gas. It's the supporting structure that really affects how well your windows will perform over time, and the bulk of this structure is made of vinyl.

High Quality vs. Low Quality Vinyl Windows

Heat loss and energy efficiency are on everyone's mind these days, considering the high cost of energy, so your choice of a high-quality vinyl window may just end up saving you some money as the years go by. The best way to be sure you're buying a high-quality vinyl window is to check for the ANSI/AAMA label. These abbreviations stand for the American National Standards Institute, Inc. (ANSI) and the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA). These organizations rate windows on a host of safety and durability issues.

While it's not legally required that all vinyl windows meet the very tough standards set down by ANSI and AAMA, by purchasing a certified window you'll know that they are going to perform well and justify their extra cost. Even windows that are not certified may still be of good or even superior quality, however.

When to Buy High Quality Vinyl Windows

A wise buying decision may come down to finding which window is right for the intended use. For example, at about 160 degrees, vinyl begins to soften and over time the windows structural integrity may be compromised. If you live in a southern or southwestern clime and your windows are exposed to long stretches of strong sunlight, it most definitely pays to invest in high quality vinyl windows that can take the heat without missing a beat!

Simply di-Vinyl

An interesting fact about white vinyl windows is that not all of them are white! Vinyl is basically an organic substance that can be degraded over time. Most varieties of vinyl will discolor or yellow to some degree due to the chronic effects of sunlight and especially the sun's ultraviolet rays. Some manufacturers add titanium dioxide and/or a specific tin compound that make the vinyl very white and help keep it that way. A cheaper method is to tint the vinyl a very pale shade of blue, which serves to delay the onset of yellowing. These bluish vinyl windows may still be of very high quality in other respects. It all goes to show you: When it comes to vinyl windows, things aren't always as transparent as they may seem!

Synthetic window shutters came from stock-size components without any or with only a few custom options. Both have the feel and look of plastic and even sound like plastic. You can buy them in a few choices of color and you cannot stain them.

They are inexpensive to make and you can also buy them at a cheaper price. They could weigh more and even sag after some time. Synthetic window shutters are relatively new to the market, and we need more feedback on how customers like them.

Vinyl shutters, on the other hand, are great to use in children's rooms since they come in the colors of the rainbow. Imagine your room sporting one of the various colors of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo or violet. It will surely add spark that can liven up any room. Choose from bright shades of fire-engine red, spring and deep green, princess pink, sparkling blue, and citrus orange to name just a few of the choices of colors.

You can also opt to purchase them in the more natural colors, ranging from various shades of cream, black, brown, and oatmeal. You may choose any color of window shutter for your kid's room to complement the wall paper or wall color. Best of all, you can even install them yourself.

Vinyl window shutters never peel, fade, chip, or warp. They can make any room come alive and are almost maintenance-free. You only need to occasionally dust or wipe them with water and mild cleanser to keep them clean and shiny.

When discussing the proper frame style for replacing the wood sash windows, I explained the difference between new construction frames versus replacement frames. When replacing aluminum windows, there is another option we have to consider regarding frame style. It's called a "retrofit" frame. Let's go over each frame type. First, we have the new construction frame with the nailing fin. If you choose to go this route, you have to remove the exterior around each window opening, pull out the nails holding the aluminum window to the studs, nail in the new vinyl window, apply flashing, caulk, and re-install the exterior around each window.(I get tired just talking about it!)In addition to being a whole lot of labor, you can run into major problems trying to install the exterior product around each window opening. If your home has stucco, you have to try and match the rest of the stucco. It can be done, but not by you. Even most professional stucco guys can't get a perfect match. What if you have wood siding? Well, you can cut away 2" of the siding around each window to get to the nail fin, then you can apply 1 X 2 or 1 X 3 trim around each window. Certainly not as much work as the stucco home, but probably more work than the average homeowner cares to tackle. What if each window is surrounded by brick? Let's not even go there! You would have to remove the bricks, then re-install them all when finished.

Trust me, you don't want to replace your old aluminum windows with new construction vinyl windows. You want to use either the replacement frame like the one used to replace the wood sash windows, or something called a retrofit frame, that is popular in the west where stucco is a common exterior. Since the procedure for measuring is the same regardless of the frame style chosen, this article will discuss the proper measuring procedure, and future articles will explain the difference in the installation process for replacement versus retrofit.

If you look at the portion of the aluminum frame that goes around the window opening into your surrounding walls, you will see three separate "legs" that form two pockets. The outside leg and the center leg form the first pocket. Your screen and stationary panel will be in this pocket. The center leg and inside leg form the second pocket, and your sliding panel is in that pocket. Find the "leg" that is the widest on all four sides. When measuring the width, run your tape measure from the widest leg on the left to the widest leg on the right. This should be the narrowest measurement. Then, subtract 3/8" from that measurement. This is the width of the replacement window. Measure the height the same way. When measuring the height, measure as close to the center of the window as possible. This is especially important on windows wider than six feet, because the top wood header has a tendency to sag over time, making the center of the opening the narrowest. You don't need to deduct 3/8" from the height like you did on the width. 1/4" is fine. These are the dimensions you use when ordering your vinyl window. If you have any picture windows (windows without a vent panel), there will only be two legs and one pocket. You still measure the same way.

INSTALLING RETROFIT AND REPLACEMENT VINYL WINDOWS

Retrofit window installation is really the easiest of all. The retrofit window already comes with an exterior trim attached. That's the flush fin that goes against the outside surface, usually stucco. Prepare the window by drilling 3/8" holes in the areas of the frame where you want to screw it in place. Normally, there will be 3 holes on each side and 3 more across the top. Don't predrill any holes in the bottom track. After removing the old panels, you want to run a heavy bead of caulk on the face of the old aluminum frame that you left in place. Then you and a helper set the bottom of the vinyl window onto the old aluminum bottom track and raise it into position. The flush fin or retrofit lip will act as a "stop" to hold the window in place. Have your helper hold the window while you go inside.

Once inside, you want to center the window in the opening. Slide the vent panel open and closed to make sure the window is plumb and level. To adjust for out of square conditions, shim the bottom right or left corner by placing a shimming material between the sill and bottom of the window frame. Once square, drive a 3" deck screw through the 3/8" holes and into the wood studs.Just seat the screw, don't overtighten. After you get the screws into the sides and top, remove the sliding panel. The bottom track should lift out. Look for drainage holes in the track and insert a thin screwdriver and lift up. Drive one screw in the bottom center, caulk around the screw head, then put the track back in place and re-install the sliding panel. Now, you want to go back outside and caulk the gap where the retrofit fin meets the exterior surface of the house. You want to have a double barrier of protection against water infiltration. Remember, you already applied a generous bead of caulk before inserting the new frame into the opening. The rest of the job is done on the inside.

First, you want to plug the 3/8" screw holes to hide the heads of the screws. We sell the hole plugs on the website. Just click on the "Purchase Trim" tab to see a picture. The plugs will pop into place in the hole. The next step is to fill the gap around the new frame with R-13 Insulation. Do not use the foam insulation that comes in a can. Many manufacturers will not honor the warranty if the foam is used. Even the non expanding foams can cause the frame to distort, causing problems. Pack the insulation in tight. You might want to wear a dust mask during this procedure. Many people, myself included, are very sensitive to insulation. After the insulation is in place, you want to install trim around the inside to finish the job. You can use wood trim from the hardware store, or some other product. But in my experience, the best product is a vinyl flat trim that matches the window frame. The flat trim can also be purchased on the website under the "Purchase Trim" tab, or you could try to find it from a local window contractor. Ours comes in 2 different widths, although the 1 3/4" wide piece is by far the most common. The trim has a double sided adhesive tape on the back. You cut the top and bottom first, stick them on the vinyl frame, making sure the trim goes to the drywall. This covers all the insulation and the old metal frame. Do the side pieces next. The final step is to caulk where the trim meets the walls.

Much of the installation process for a replacement frame is the same as the retrofit frame. But, there are a few differences. When you put the new window into the opening using a replacement frame, you don't have the flush fin holding the frame in place. You and your helper have to hold the frame in place while you put a screw in the top center to support the frame. Then, you can do your adjusting for a square condition. All of the procedures on the inside will be exactly the same, from hole plugs, to insulation, to trim and caulk. The outside is different. You have to apply the trim that was part of the retrofit frame. Again, I prefer the flat trim. Once again, you apply a bead of caulk to the old frame, then measure and cut the top and bottom trim pieces. Apply the adhesive part of the trim to the vinyl frame, and let the other part contact the bead of caulk. Trim all four sides, then caulk again where the trim meets the exterior material.

As you can see, it really doesn't matter if the exterior of your home is brick, stone, siding, or stucco. You can install vinyl windows without having to damage the surrounding structure. We have step by step instructional videos for sale on the website at How To Install Windows

DUAL PANE WINDOW GLASS REPAIR

When we start talking about dual pane windows, one of the first things that comes to mind is vinyl window frames instead of aluminum. When dealing with dual pane windows, you can have either aluminum or vinyl frames, depending on the year the house was built. Dual pane glass got popular in the 1980's, but vinyl frames didn't really catch on until the 1990's. So, if your house is less than 10 years old, chances are you have vinyl framed windows. In either case, I will discuss the differences. Let's say you have a sliding aluminum frame window with dual pane glass. The procedure for removing the frame from the opening and the glass from the sash is the same as with the single pane windows. The differences are, first, the glass goes into the frame about twice as far as the single pane window. The single pane window glass went 1/4" into the surrounding rubber. The dual pane usually goes 1/2" into the rubber. So, if both pieces of glass have been broken, you are going to have to order a new IGU (Insulated Glass Unit) from the local glass shop. They are going to want to know the width, height, overall thickness, and possibly the individual glass thickness. The best way to get the dimensions is to measure the width and height from rubber to rubber, write those numbers down. Then, remove the panel from the opening and place it on a table like we did with the single pane window. Remove the screws from opposite corners and pull of the frame. You will be able to see how far the glass goes into the surrounding rubber. If it's 1/2", then you want to add 1" to the width and height that you measured previously (1/2" times two sides= 1"). Then, measure the overall thickness of the unit by removing the rubber from the glass edge. Typically, this dimension is 1/2", but not always. There is a metal spacer that divides the two panes of glass. Make a note of the color so you can request the same color in the new IGU. It's either going to be silver or bronze. If you want to get the same size spacer, you need to give the glass shop the thickness of each piece of glass in the IGU. If the old unit has 1/8" glass on both sides, and the overall thickness of the unit is 1/2", then they will use a 1/4" spacer. If the glass is 3/32" on both sides, they will use a 5/16" spacer. If you don't care about matching the spacer thickness, you can request the thicker 1/8" glass, and they will automatically use a 1/4" spacer.

When you get the new IGU home, the installation is the same as the single pane window. Now, what if only one side of the IGU has been broken? Many times the outer pane will break, but the inside pane is fine. You can order a whole new IGU like we just did, or, if you're the adventurous type, you can order only the single pane of glass that was broken and replace it. I'm going to explain how to do it, then i'm going to tell you the things that can go wrong. After you have the window pane on the table with the surrounding frame removed, you will see a black rubber type substance around the edge where the spacer is applied. This is a butyl sealant, and you have to separate the broken glass from this butyl. The best way to do it is to take a utility knife with a new blade and break through the butyl where it meets the broken glass. Then, take a new hacksaw blade, and push it into the area where you sparated the butyl from the glass. You don't want the hacksaw blade to be attached to a hacksaw. Using your hand, saw back and forth as you work your way around the edge of the glass. This should allow you to remove the glass. Once that's done, lay rags on top of the good piece of glass to catch any debris, and scrape the surface of the spacer that will be contacting the new glass. Use a putty knife. Then, remove the rags and debris. When you are ready to put the new glass on, clean the inside of the good piece of glass that you didn't remove. Remember, once you install the new glass, any debris or finger marks on the inside will be permanently sealed. So, clean it real good and check it from all angles. Do the same to the side of the new glass that will be going to the inside of the IGU. Then, run a thin bead of clear silicone around the entire perimeter of the spacer. Set your new glass on the spacer and use finger pressure to adhere the glass to the silicone all the way around. Then, come in from the side, and run silicone around the side where the glass and spacer meet. Cover the window opening with something for 24 hours. You do not want to touch the IGU for 24 hours. The silicone needs to cure. After 24 hours, you can assemble the unit and install it back into the opening.

There are a couple of things that can go wrong. The first one is leaving marks on the inside portion of the glass. Once you seal the glass, you cannot clean what's between the panes. The other thing involves condensation between the panes. If you have even the slightest break in the silicone seal around the glass, chances are you will begin to see moisture form as soon as the nights get cold and the days get warm. You are going to have to decide if you are confident enough in your ability to do the job right, or if it's better to pay the extra money to have it done for you. Just because you pay someone to do it, doesn't mean you still won't encounter the same problems. The difference is, they have to guarantee their IGU for a minimum of 1 year. I have received many units over the years that had marks in between the glass. The beauty of it is the manufacturer can't dispute it, because there's no way anyone else could have done it except them.

OK, what if the window frames are vinyl instead of aluminum? Well, the main difference is the glass in a vinyl window no longer has the rubber gasket around the edge. You don't remove the opposite corner screws and separate the frame from the glass. What they do is put either silicone or a two sided tape on the lip of the frame where the glass rests. That's what holds the glass in the frame, then they apply a snap in stop on all four sides of the glass. So, you have to remove the stops first, then turn over the panel and break the seal holding the glass to the frame using a utility knife. Wear gloves during this procedure. If only one side of the IGU is broken, don't even think about repairing just the one side. You will never get that IGU out of the frame without breaking the other piece of glass in the process. But, on the positive side, you can remove the stops without taking the panel out if it's a slider. You can then measure the dimensions of the glass, and order the new IGU. That way you eliminate any need to temporarily cover up your window. The same is true for the stationary portion of a slider, or a picture window. Before you install the new IGU, be sure and clean the lip that had the tape or silicone, and apply either silicone or tape. Either will work.

Removal

The 60 Series channel balance is most common on a single hung aluminum or vinyl window. The bottom venting sash slides up and down, while the top is fixed and does not move. To remove the balancer the venting sash needs to be removed.

The window needs to be in the closed position to determine the type of take-out clip used on the window. The most common is a metal clip about 1/4 inch wide by 1-1/4 inches long. Some windows have a plastic clip and some have a protruding dimple. The procedure is basically the same. The instructions are based on the metal take-out clip. Some windows have a plastic stop or bumper to stop the window from raising all the way. If the window has this it needs to be removed before proceeding.

There is a metal take-out clip on both sides of the window frame. Pull both take-out clips away from the side of the window. The bottom of the clip will pop out. This catches the balancer when removing the venting sash. Raise the sash up to where the balancer engages the take-out clip. The balancer may not be visible, but you can feel the connection. Continue to lift the sash up as far a possible and push to the left or right. The sash will disengage from the balancer allowing one side of the sash to swing out away from the frame. Remove the sash completely from the opening and set aside. The balancer is now exposed and normally the top is locked into the take-out clip holding it in place. If the balance rod is broken it may be laying loose.

Pull down on the channel balance to release it from the take-out clip. CAUTION: The channel balance is under extreme tension and must be handled with care until the tension is released. Tilt the balancer forward and you can see a string with a clip attached that is hooked to the frame of the window. slowly let the balancer retract and relieve its pressure. The hook at the base of the balancer must be removed from the window frame. Take note of how the hook is removed. To reinstall the new balancer the hook must be inserted back into this slot. After you have identified the correct size and weight of channel balance the process is reversed to reinstall.

Installation

Insert the clip from the bottom of the channel balance into the slot in the window frame and then push down on the balancer to engage the top under the take-out clip Tip: Sometimes the hook can be positioned to make the engagement easier. Sometimes the hook can be pulled out a little and use your thumb to hold the tension while inserting the clip into the frame. After both channel balancers have been properly installed the sash can be replaced. Be sure the top of the balancer is secured in place under the take-out clip and is centered in the opening.

Put one side of the sash into the jamb above the take-out clip.( the higher, the better) push as far in as possible and then swing the other side of the sash into place. Lower the sash slowly and be sure the sash has engaged the balancers. Push the sash down into the locked position. Push in the bottom of the take-out clip on both sides. Open and close window to be sure it is operating properly. Replace plastic stops / bumpers if needed.

Vinyl is the result of a series of processes, which convert hydrocarbon-based materials such as petroleum, natural gas, or coal into polymers. The vinyl polymer is based on the hydrocarbon: ethylene, and chlorine.

Chlorine provides vinyl with two benefits that other plastics don't have. First,
chlorine is derived from brine or salt and water, which is readily available, and
an inexpensive commodity. Because of this, vinyl is less effective by the fluctuations of the global oil market.

The second benefit is that chlorine has excellent flame retardant properties, which are carried directly through to the end product. This makes vinyl an excellent choice for electrical conduit and wiring, which need high resistance to ignition and flame spread.

Ethylene and chlorine react to each other to form ethylene dichloride. This is
transformed into vinyl chloride monomer, or VCM, which is a gas. A final step,
or polymerization, converts the monomer into vinyl polymer, which is a fine, white resin known as polyvinyl chloride or PVC, which has been shortened to simply vinyl.

Vinyl resin, however, is rigid, sometimes brittle and must be combined with selected chemical additives and modifiers to make it flexible and to achieve the many properties desired by the resulting end product vinyl.

Vinyl is the only plastic, which can be manufactured into thin, flexible wall coverings, car tops or kept rigid to be used in construction on buildings. The additives and modifiers used will determine the use of the vinyl as well as its color.
