Measuring your window accurately is the most important step you will take. To get started, you will need a few items including:

Measuring tape

Pencil and Paper

Calculator

- First, using your measuring tape, measure the width of each window to the inside borders.

For a fuller window treatment, add additional fabric to the width measurement.

-The height of a window treatment can hit two inches below the actual windowsill or touch he floor. Your decision should be based on the specific color, room and purpose

-When measuring for treatments, a best measurement to have is the length from the top of the rod bracket to the bottom of the window. This measurement is an important reference to have if style has not been identified or is changed in the future.

-Drape the material from where it will hang, and double-check your measurements before cutting.

First decide what type of a mount you want to do.

Width
- Starting from the left top of the window, take a horizontal
measurement from left to right of the window, including any mounted
hardware to be used or covered.

Length - For the length
dimension, start from the top of the rod or bracket above the window
and measure down to the desired length of the topper.

For accuracy, do the length measurement at the left, right and center of the window.

Tip: To determine the length of material needed for a topper, you need to measure your window and then triple that number. For example, if your window measured 42 inches (42x3=126) you would need material 126 inches long.

Making Your Current Doors Energy Efficient

Energy efficient doors are insulated and sealed tightly to prevent cold from entering and warm air from leaking out. Regular doors can also become energy efficient doors by adding a few simple weatherproofing accessories, including bottom sweeps, typically made from vinyl, and magnetic weatherstripping.

Choose an Energy Efficient Material

Three very common energy efficient materials are wood, steel and fiberglass. Wood itself is an excellent insullation. Steel and fiberglass doors have an insullating foam material inside making them Energy Efficient.

Wood Doors are beautiful but are susceptible to weather damage and are fairly expensive.

Steel Doors are strong, affordable and resist warping.

Fiberglass Doors are more expensive than steel, less expensive than wood and are resistant to warping, denting and rusting.

Energy Efficient Doors
Keep your home safe and your family comfortable with Energy Efficient Doors.
www.makeyourhomeenergyefficient.com/energyefficientdoors.html

VARIOUS WINDOW TREATMENTS

These paragraphs deal with the systematic way that one has to go about when meaning to involve in window treatment. It makes clear the difference between the various kinds of window treatments available. Usage, size other factors are also brought to light. The main test is in selecting the right treatment for the window. Amongst numerous options available, the choice to decide is not very easy. The following are five pointers towards selection of the right treatment for the window, in case you are planning on a major changeover or opting for a new window treatment.

1. The foremost thing that one needs to do is to know the style of the window. The architecture, technique employed should also be borne in mind. The contrast between the ambience and the architectural details of the window needs to be looked into. If this is not given due consideration, what ensues is a clash between the overall dcor and the look of the window that has undergone the treatment.

2. The usage and the adaptability of the room have to be assessed first. In case of embarking of the window treatment of a bathroom, then the moisture effect has to be noted. Whereas, in case of window treating in the dining room then you could probably go for a treatment which is more formal.

3. The fact to be considered is the length and breadth of the window or bamboo shades. In case the window is tall, then you would have to go for a swag or valence that varies from the rest of the design to break the length of the window. Long panels should generally be avoided. When the window is small, then you can place a rod just below the ceiling line or above the trim and further longer panels could be added to make it look longer.

4. Further, the budget factor has to be taken into consideration. There are ready made, custom made or do it yourself window treatments. The most expensive would be the custom window treatments. Readily available window treatments are available in various price and size ranges. The best would be the make it yourself ones which would require some amount of skill and patience but would definitely be cheaper.

5. In case of being sure about installing custom window treatments, than the cost factor also has to be accounted for. Having these windows is easy but the maintenance is not. It would cost quite a lot towards the periodic cleaning of custom windows by professional agencies.

The above mentioned five pointers are a sure shot method towards the selection of the perfect window treatment for your home. Window changeover need not necessarily be an overwhelming and daunting event, but, these tips will help you have fun while embarking on the whole procedure and you will also have great looking windows in your house or office.

DOUBLE PANE WINDOWS

Homes with windows that were installed more than 10 years ago are likely going to be inefficient when it comes to climate control. In a city like Los Angeles, that can be a huge problem. When the temperature soars you end up turning on the air conditioner to counter the heat. That can add up to a huge energy expenditure, and an even larger bill.

Double pane windows are a terrific way to conserve energy in your home. Double pane windows help block a lot of outside heat from seeping in through the windows. On average, double pane windows are twice as efficient at insulating your home as single pane windows. Even so, in a city like Los Angeles it’s not enough to just invest in double pane windows: you need great ones that will enhance the look of your home.

If you’re still thinking about replacement windows and don’t want to pay for double pane you’re not going to find many new windows that are single pane. Most windows made today are double and triple glazed to allow implementation of coatings and gas fills that can’t be accomplished with a single pane. But if you take the time to repair, seal and shade your existing single pane windows you can boost their performance and shave a considerable amount off of your heating and cooling bill.

However, one of the most important projects is the installation of new house windows.
There are many reasons for changing your house windows. For example,
you can make the exterior of your home look better, which is very
important if you are considering a house sale. To make a good
impression on people who might be buying your home, it is essential to
improve its appearance with the right windows and doors.

However, undertaking home improvement projects such as the
installation of external doors and house windows should not only take
into account how your home looks to others. Instead, you should also
consider your own comfort. This is one reason why some people decide to
install replacement doors and vinyl windows. UPVC windows and doors
have significant advantages when you consider home improvement projects.

Many home improvement articles will list these advantages. Among
them are the fact that PVC house windows and doors are weathertight.
Unlike wooden framed windows there is no danger of rain, sleet or snow
entering your home because of the tight seal that exists between your
PVC house windows and the window frame. And UPVC double glazing really
works with double glass windows having a membrane between the two
sheets of glass that keeps the weather where it belongs - on the
outside!

It is because of the tight seals that vinyl windows cut down on heat
loss by half according to researchers. What this means is that when you
have PVC house windows you will have a cosy, warm living space with
much less need to central heating. This can save you a lot of money over the long winter months.

When you are planning to improve or remodel your
home with replacement windows and doors, don’t worry that being warm in
winter means being too hot in summer. Most UPVC windows now have a
feature which allows you to have the window slightly ajar to let air
flow through, while still being locked so that your house is secure.

There are several styles to choose from with vinyl windows, so you
can select the style that best suits your home. Try sash windows or
casement windows to vary the look of your home. And if you live in a
sunny area, tinted windows may be a good option to shut out the glare
while letting in the light.

PVC can be a cost effective way to dress up your home. That’s
because once windows and doors have been installed, they require
relatively little maintenance. When you opt for timber framed windows,
you know that within a couple of years you will need to sand and
repaint if they are to maintain their appearance. That’s not the case
with UPVC windows. All you need to keep them looking good is some soap
and water - and some window cleaner from time to time. PVC is weather
resistant and so light cleaning is all that will be needed.

Sometimes you want the best of both worlds and with PVC windows you
can have it. Having these windows does not mean giving up the
attractive appearance of wood. Instead you can choose light or dark
wood like finishes for your new house windows, to make them a really
classy home improvement project.

 Though replacing or mending faulty
windows may be expensive, ignoring them can lead to water or mold
damage and a soaring energy bill. This article shares five signs that
it's time to fix or replace your windows.

Faulty windows can lead to up to 75 percent heat loss during the
winter, uncomfortable drafts, water damage, and mold. Here are a few
tell-tale signs that it's time to replace your windows.

Five Signs that it's Time to Replace Your Windows

If a window develops ice or a frosty glaze inside a window pane, poor ventilation or insufficient insulation may be to blame.

If you feel a cold draft in the winter or a warm draft during the
summer when sitting near your window, it is a clear sign of poor
insulation. This problem can significantly increase your energy bill.

If you stand inside your house with a lit candle lit near a
window's edge and the flame flickers or goes out, your weather
stripping may need to be replaced.

If your window no longer remains open on its own, requiring you to prop it open some how, it is no longer in good condition.

If your windows become fogged with condensation there may be a
seal failure. Seal failures are usually fixed by replacing either the
glazing or the entire window.

In today's "green" economy, so many people are looking at ways to save money and energy at the same time.

Windows and doors are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to
home energy loss. And replacing them is an easy to way to help the
environment as well as put a little extra cash in your pockets.

There are several things to know before shopping for windows. Many
of the big box home improvement retailers have knowledgeable and
helpful associates, however, they may throw you a curve ball when you
are pricing windows.

First of all, the only standard thing about windows is that you can
see through them. There is no standardized size like doors. Windows
come in all shapes and sizes. Secondly, who is going to install these
new windows? Will you be doing the job yourself, or an independent
contractor, a friend, or will you use the installations services
offered by the home improvement retailer?

Generally it is a good idea to get a couple of estimates from
contractors or friends and compare the pricing. A lot of the big box
retailers offer installation, however, they do require a down payment
before you buy. Many are now switching to a free in-home service
estimate. They will schedule an appointment with you and give you a
complete estimate of the total job, including the price of the windows.

If you decide to tackle this job on your own, you may consider
trying one or two windows first, just to get a feel for the task at
hand. Based on that, you can budget out the rest of your project.

There are several of excellent brands of windows on the market. Many
people do not realize the variety and are usually thrown for a loop
when a sales associate starts spouting off unfamiliar brand names.
Brands like Andersen, Jeld-Wen, Silverline, American Craftsman, Peach
Tree, Pella, and Crestline offer excellent products at a variety of
prices and styles.

Your next step will be deciding which type of window you want to
replace the old ones with. There are wood windows, vinyl clad wood
windows, aluminum clad wood windows and vinyl windows.

Vinyl windows, it should be noted, will have the same exterior and
interior color. Vinyl clad wood, and aluminum clad wood come with an
exterior color and either an unfinished wood or prefinished wood
interior. Aluminum clad is the same as the vinyl clad.

Clad means, that on the exterior of the window, the wood frame is wrapped up by either a vinyl or aluminum material.

Windows also come in a variety of styles. Included are double-hung,
single-hung, casement, awning, hopper, slider, or fixed. Double-hung
windows are ones that both panes of glass slide up and down. In a
single-hung, only the bottom pane slides up and down. Casement windows
are hinged on the sides and crank out away from the house. Awning
windows are hinged at the top and crank out also. A hopper, or
basement, window, is hinged at the bottom and tilts in. Sliders are
just that, the slide from left to right. Finally, fixed windows just
don't open at all.

Now that you made it this far, are just going to go with replacement
windows or new construction? Replacement windows are ones that can be
ordered to specific sizes and are designed to replace the old windows.
New construction are just that, new construction. You have a blank wall
to work with.

While new construction can be used in a replacement setting, it can
be a bit more tricky. New construction windows usually cannot be
ordered in specific sizes. There are a predetermined size range for
these types of windows. So your measurements need to be precise. Also
be prepared to do a little siding work on the outside and drywall work
on the inside.

Once you have made that decision, you may hear some unfamiliar words
"LoE" and "Argon Gas." LoE is a technical term for Low Energy loss. It
is a metallic coating put on the glass that is designed to reflect heat
back to its source. So it will keep winter heat in and summer heat out.
Argon Gas is a colorless, orderless gas that is injected between the
panes in the panels. It too reduces heat loss and solar heat gain. A
window with both will save you lots of money on energy bills.

Finally, before you start shopping, you need to know your size. Like
I said earlier, windows come in all shapes and sizes. Many people don't
know where to measure to find out the size of their windows.

Most big box retailers deal with rough opening size. That is the
size of the hole the window will be going in. Sometimes, they will use
the frame size, which is the exact size of the window itself.

To get your rough opening size, you need to measure from jamb to
jamb. That is the wood frame holding the window in the wall. To get
your rough opening width, you need to measure in three places inside
the track of the current window. Measure at the top, middle and bottom
and go by your smallest measurement. Going by the smallest measurement
will ensure a proper fit.

To find the rough opening height, you will need to measure from
inside the tracks at the top of the window down to where the sill
begins to slope outside. The highest point of you sill. Once again take
three measurements: left, middle, and right, going by the smallest
measurement.

Knowing this information, will be a big help when deciding to get
rid of those old drafty windows. One other thing to look for is the
Energy Star logo. Energy star windows are certified to help reduce
energy loss in your home. Plus the federal government has been giving
tax breaks to those who use Energy Star products.

For more information about energy ratings and overall consumer
satisfaction, visit the website, www.nfrc.org. It is a consumer
advocate website that tests every window ever made and will give you an
unbiased look at which one is the best and worst. They are a government
funded website and hold no affiliation with any manufacturer or big box
retailer.

How do I know so much? Well, I used to be a Millwork supervisor for
The Home Depot. They were great at teaching me everything I needed to
know to help sell windows and doors.

by Michael Burke

 Not
all replacement windows and doors are created equal. When reinstalling
windows or outside doors, there are several factors to be considered to
be sure that you make the best choice. Many home improvement articles
will suggest changing doors and windows as an easy way to give your
home a face lift. While this might seem costly in the short term,
choosing the right material for replacement windows and doors can
guarantee long term savings as well as improving the exterior of your
home.

So what material should you choose when replacing outside doors or
reinstalling windows? Many people like the appearance of wood. As a
living material which is available in a variety of finishes, wood
certainly has some appeal – and we have been building with it since the
earliest times. Depending on the wood you choose, getting doors and
windows need not cost the earth, though you should beware of the longer
term hidden costs. If you choose to replace existing doors and windows
with wooden doors and windows, then within a couple of years you will
have to spend more money on them. That's because wood does not stand up
well to weathering. In only a couple of years you will have to sand and
repaint if you want the outside of your home to continue to look good.
This DIY job takes time and is messy and expensive.

However, there is an alternative to wood which is much easier to
maintain and has other benefits as well – UPVC. PVC or vinyl
replacement windows and doors are remarkably cost effective when you
consider how little maintenance they require. Apart from cleaning with
soap and water, you won't have to do a thing to them for years and your
PVC replacement doors and windows will continue to look great. Another
reason to consider this material when reinstalling windows and
replacing outside doors is that it is very effective in conserving
heat. Vinyl windows in particular can cut heat loss in half, so that
you save on central heating bills.

Many people feel that PVC or vinyl gives your home a bland look, but
there are many options available that mean that this material can
compete on level terms with other window and door materials. If you
like the look of wood, then you can get doors and windows with a light
or dark wood effect that is almost indistinguishable from the real
thing. Of course, you will know the difference, especially if you are
putting your feet up while your neighbour sands and paints his wooden
window frames.

And
like other windows and doors you can have decorative elements for this
remodelling project. Think about tints for your windows, stained glass
panels or frosted glass to vary the look a bit. And UPVC is also a good
material for other doors and windows in the home as well. You might
also need replacement windows and doors for your conservatory and vinyl
is an excellent choice. PVC will save you energy and money so it's a
good material to consider when reinstalling windows and outside doors.

by ADRIAN JONES

Is it time for you to remove your old windows and purchase replacement
windows? Read this article to learn more about upgrading windows, cost
of replacement windows and installing replacement windows.

Upgrades:

When homeowners have to replace their windows, they often take it as
an opportunity to upgrade their windows. Homeowners usually choose to
purchase energy efficient windows. Energy efficient windows tend to be
more popular because they help reduce costs for homeowners. For those
who are looking for energy efficient windows, the writers at Energy
Star, www.energystar.gov, suggest looking for windows with
glass coatings, gas fills, warm edge spacers, and improved framing
materials. Homeowners should know that these additional features can
increase the costs of the windows.

Costs:

The costs of a replacement window project vary depending on how many
windows the homeowner is replacing and what windows that they are
choosing to replace them with. One of the most common types of
replacement windows are vinyl replacement windows. According to those
at Vinyl Replacement Windows, www.vinyl-replacement-windows.com,
the average cost for a window 30 inch by 48 inch ranges from $150 to
$500 per window. The more expensive windows usually have a series of
specialized features.

Installation:

Along with the costs of the individual windows, homeowners must also
anticipate the costs of installation. There are several options
homeowners have when it comes to installation. First, homeowners could
choose to use professionals that their window vendor provides. Then,
homeowners can choose to have these costs included in their estimate.
Secondly, homeowners could choose to hire an independent contractor who
specializes in window installation. Lastly, they could choose to
install the windows themselves. Some manufacturers make kits that come
with the windows to help those who want to do it themselves.

The Right Replacement Windows Can Help Fix a House Too Cold

Modern windows are measured with an
R-value, a U-factor and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. 'Huh,' you say.
Read on to find how to turn a window into a thermostat.

Your house is chronically too cold. Even in the daytime it is tough to
sit in a window seat. Not only is this uncomfortable, but it is driving
your electricity bill through the roof.

Find replacement windows that measure up in terms of the U-factor,
R-Value and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. The U-factor of a window is
the speed of heat transfer from inside of your home to the outside of
your home. The lower the U-factor the better heat stays inside. The
R-value of a window is the measurement of resistance to heat flow. The
higher the R-value the better your window is at stopping any heat
transfer. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is the measurement of
solar heat gain inside your home. A high SHGC means a lot of solar heat
is being absorbed inside the home.

Replacement Window Suppliers - Finding

The truth is that it's not very difficult to find replacement window suppliers at all. In fact often the complaint is that there is actually too wide a choice when it comes to finding a replacement window supplier to purchase new windows from.

Their advertising is often extensive as well. No matter where you are - window suppliers are more than keen to keep reminding you about their products.

This advertising from window supplying companies can be useful, as you can compare their various offers (though make sure your comparing the same type of window) when you do a price check.

If the suppliers have local showrooms you can go take a look-see of course, and it can be a good idea to physically touch a window that you're considering buying from a supplier, rather than just looking at it. This may seem a strange thing, but it is true for a lot of people.

Web Searching For Window Suppliers
Of course the easiest way to find a supplier of replacement windows is on the internet through a search engine.

A mistake that a lot of people make though is just to type in the word - windows as a query. This however will turn up a lot of stuff about Microsoft.

So the term "replacement window suppliers" is a good general one to start with.

But if you know you're only interested in purchasing replacement wood windows for example. Then "wood replacement window suppliers" or "suppliers of wood replacement windows" will be better as this will cut out suppliers that only sell aluminum or vinyl windows.

You can add your locality too if you want to see local window suppliers as well as national ones. So "wood replacement window suppliers in Portland, Oregon" is an example of that.

Those quote marks should be used too, to contain the keywords in your query - as this will tell the search engine all the words should be included in the results. (Although some like Google always include all the words in the search anyway).

By: Anthony Lee

The Care and Feeding of Your Clear Vinyl Boat Windows by James "Doc" Lewis

Strataglass®, Lexan®, Plexiglass®, Isenglass, Crystal Clear, Eisenglass, etc. Whatever you call it, it all comes from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which has certain definite characteristics.

1. Vinyl is a UV-sensitive material which degrades when exposed to sunlight.

2. A vinyl's topcoat holds in plasticizers, softening agents which keep vinyl supple.

3. Clear vinyl has NO topcoat. (The one exception to this rule is Strataglass, which has a protective coating. Unless otherwise noted, the advise in this article applies only to untreated clear vinyl and therefore excludes Strataglass.)

That's It! All you ever needed to know about vinyl boat windows in one easy lesson. Maintaining a topcoat and protecting against UV damage will keep vinyl looking good for years.

Let up, for as little as a month, in this climate, and, well, read on . . .

The sad truth is that all of those lovely, clear, vinyl windows, that you were so proud of when they were new, will yellow, scratch, and become an ugly nuisance in a very short time without proper care.

Q. What you mean Doc, you don't just hang um and forget um?

Who is that guy?

Unlike regular safety glass which has a fairly hard surface and resists scratching, and even your vinyl seats which have a top-coat to protect the underlying material, a vinyl window requires a protective coating to separate it from the elements.

Think of it a little like your skin. With regular washing, sunscreen, and moisturizer our skin can take the Emerald Coast summer conditions without too much trouble. Eliminate one or more of these and stay outside 24/7 and we'll be looking 102 years old in no time, even if we're only 20.

Cleaning Procedure

At BoatDocs1 we start off by removing as much of the loose dirt as possible with a fine water spray. It's best to wet the entire surface giving the water time to soften anything stuck to the window. Next we gently wash the surface with a mild soap and water solution. (No detergents or harsh cleansers, PLEASE)

Next, give the window a thorough rinsing with more fresh water and then dry, either with a clean terry cloth towel or chamois.

After several years of experimentation and research we have been convinced beyond a doubt that the only product to use on vinyl is 303Products, Aerospace Protectant. I'll let you go to their web site and read their copy on why it's the best. But notice I said copy, not hype, because after using it for over a year I find their advertising to actually be a little understated.

We treat by spraying the product on both sides of the surface and then polishing with a clean, dry, and well worn terry cloth towel. Old baby diapers are better but are becoming nearly as rare as DoDo eggs. . Applications last from 4-6 weeks and after the first couple of uses it seems to get easier to maintain as the surface actually seals itself and nothing seems to stick to it.

Application improves visibility and reduces wear and scratching by reducing the coefficient of friction. In laymens terms this just means that it makes the surface slicker than snail snot. It also repels water, dust, dirt, salt, and ultra-violet radiation. (SPF 40) Added benefits are an anti-fog/anti-glare finish.

A monthly treatment will keep those curtains looking like new for many years.

And What About Strataglass®?

At the beginning of this article I mentioned that Strataglass doesn't fit the general recommendations for regular untreated vinyl windows. The reason behind this is that it is treated, at the factory, with a special protective coating which if maintained in accordance with their recommendations will last the life of the fabric and prevent the chemical leaching which is the cause of problems for the untreated fabrics.

I don't want to get too far into specifics with this as they do have a website of their own and have care and cleaning advise which they offer their customers. If you have Strataglass® curtains on your boat I suggest going to their website at http://www.webworksgroup.com/projects/strata/beta2/index.html and seeing just what they suggest for their product.

What if we're too late?

If your vinyl windows have begun to show the effects of aging, we apologize.(should have told you sooner) We offer a restoration service consisting of fine polishing and a chemical treatment. (replacement of the plasticizers) In many cases we can eliminate most scratches, restore the translucent properties, and with continued maintenance with 303 Aerospace Protectant will add years to the effective life of your vinyl windows.

If you have some vinyl windows which you are thinking about replacing let us take a look and see what we can do. The service is quite reasonable when compared to the price of replacement.

Below is the step by step procedure we follow to bring back vinyl windows - hope it helps.

Overview:

This set of instructions is for windows with moderate scratching and crazing. If the scratches are very deep the process would need to be started off with wet sanding which is a subject all by itself and won't be covered in this article.

What we want to accomplish here is to polish out any scratches, stains, imperfections, or swirl marks starting with a very fine compound and then finishing with a restorer polish to replenish the plasticizers in the vinyl.

Tools:

You should find all of these items at an automotive paint store. To start with you will need a variable speed electric drill (1000-1200 rpm) with a velcro backing plate which will accept foam rubber polishing pads. You will need 3 of the pads but an extra one will save some time when changing polish. Always reserve a pad for each compound or polish. While your there ask if they carry the fine, micro-polishing compounds made specifically for clear vinyl windows that you will use to actually remove the scratches. If the sales-person seems to know what they're talking about, pick his brain on what products he sells the most of for this purpose.

I have had excellent results with a 3-M product called "Finesse-it", which is used on both gelcoat and vinyl to good effect. If your trip to the automotive supply doesn't turn up anything better this will do the job and you can use what's left over on the rest of your boat.

Another product I recommend highly, is Meguiars, "Plastx" which is perfect for the finish (polish) runs with the pads. It also makes a good occasional cleaner and preservative throughout the year. It uses the Microscopic Diminishing Abrasive Technology, (MDAT), used in their paint and gelcoat polishes to produce a powerful, yet safe plastic cleaner. If the scratches are light you may get good results by using just this product and making a couple of passes with the buffer.

Procedure:

If you have some experience with polishing it's a plus although the technique used here is unique to the material and therefore will be learned as you go along.

We usually start with the smallest, or least noticeable window first to get an idea of the amount of work needed and to check the results. If there are several small pieces choose the one which is most damaged. After completing one is a good time to compare the work involved with the expense of replacing the window. If time isn't a prime consideration but money is, then this system will serve you well.

Step by Step:

Cleaning:

First thing is to thoroughly wash the window using a mild (Ivory is good) soap and water solution, rinsing well, and then drying gently with a soft cotton towel. I prefer old cloth diapers when I can get them but they have become nearly extinct in my neck of the woods. The main thing is to always use the softest, cleanest towel you can find on your windows and now is a good time to start.

Polishing:

After the window is dry lay it out on a firm, flat table with plenty of soft padding underneath. Make sure the padding is smooth and level or you'll leave edges as you polish. Set up your drill with the backing plate and the first pad and apply enough of the polish to the window to cover a 1 foot square section.

Immediately start buffing the section using light pressure and keeping the pad moving. The secret here is slow and easy, it's plastic not concrete. Keep it moist (use a water spray bottle) and when the compound is nearly used up, you'll get a feel for it, reapply to an adjoining section and repeat the procedure. Continue till the side has been done and then gently clean using the procedure outlined above for cleaning.

Finishing:

When the polishing and cleaning is completed (both sides) take a clean pad and apply the Plastx to the entire window following the same procedure as for the compound/polish. When the window has been completely covered take a clean cotton cloth and buff off the haze. The vinyl will absorb most of the Plastx which will help feed and restore the plasticizers.

As a final procedure I usually go over the entire window with 303 Products Space Age Protectant to assure protection from ultra violet radiation, the number 1 enemy of all vinyl and clear vinyl windows particularly.

A Couple of Tips on Vinyl:

NEVER use any kind of regular window cleaners, detergents, abrasives, petroleum based products, or alcohol on vinyl windows. They are too harsh and will damage the top coat, speeding up the loss of plasticizers. The vinyl will dry out, turn yellow and brittle, and soon need to be replaced. You've seen this before, now you know why.

Right along with this is a big ditto for all of your vinyl products either on the boat or ashore. Only the mildest soap solution, complete rinsing and a safe protective coating will keep all of your vinyl goods looking like new.

Who would be the best person to help you find suitable fixtures and fittings for doors and windows?

Architects are trained to create designs that are structurally sound, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. They also often have a basis knowledge of construction materials, though not the detailed knowledge required when choosing appropriate hardware.

Interior designers specialize in the decorating and furnishing of rooms and can offer fresh, innovative ideas and advice, but will be concentrating on the appearance rather than how the fittings work.Maybe a blacksmith or metal worker would be the person to ask.. No, a joiner is the best person to give advise.

Joiners understand what is needed, they have made doors and windows and know how big a hinge would be needed to hold the weight of a solid oak door, or which lock would fit properly and safely in rebated french windows.

Advise is often needed as good quality hardware can be expensive. You need to get the right thing, before cutting holes in your precious doors and windows.Architectural Ironmongery Ltd is run by trained joiners with over getting on for 90 years of joinery knowledge and experience between the three of them. They are happy to discuss restoration projects with their customers, giving advise when necessary. The retail and mail order business is based in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, England, but ships world wide and has a huge amount and variety of hardware in stock.

Materials for Building Window Shutters by Brian Wright

Shopping for window shutters can become confusing because of the huge variety of materials used and promoted as superior. The construction methods of a shutter unit, including the materials used, contributes greatly to the overall cost of shutters purchased. However, a well-constructed unit made out of high-quality materials will also last longer and look better than something less than ideal. Following is an outline of various woods and synthetic materials that are often used in building shutters.

Basswood Shutters
(Tilia Americana Linnaeus, or the American Linden)

Basswood is absolutely the best wood for building window shutters. The Basswood tree can be found from Quebec south to Delaware and the Atlantic coast west to Eastern Kentucky with an average height of 65 feet. Basswood is a renewable resource and careful forest management ensures tree harvesting is done responsibly, balancing growth with removal. Each year the United States grows about twice as much hardwood as it harvests.

Basswood shutters are very straight and has a fine uniform texture with an indistinct grain. Basswood machines well and is easy to work, and screws and glues well and can be sanded and stained to a smooth finish. It dries fairly rapidly with little distortion. Basswood has fairly high shrinkage but good dimensional stability when dry.

Popular uses for basswood include drafting tables, broom handles, carvings, turnings, furniture, moldings, millwork, musical instruments, woodenware, food containers, and surfboards.

General Basswood shutter characteristics:

Does not warp

Lightweight yet very strong

Uniform grain for a beautiful stain finish

Low in resin and tannin which may bleed through finish

Renewable resource which is replenished as it is harvested

Superior gluing and finishing properties.

Oak Shutters

Oak shutters are very heavy. Oak shutters add much weight to window jambs and screws require pre-drilling. Oak shutters are not suitable for painting. Oak shutter louvers tend to warp.

Maple Shutters

Maple shutters are very heavy. Maple shutters add much weight to window jambs and screws require pre-drilling. Maple louvers are hard to tension uniformly.

Poplar Shutters

Poplar shutters mill and paints well. Mineral streaks and a green color make poplar unsuitable for staining. Poplar is moderately heavy for shutters. Poplar is widely available, but less costly. Poplar is best used for millwork and trim that is nailed in place. Popular produces a lesser quality shutter.

Cedar Shutters

Cedar shutters mill and finish nicely. However, color varies greatly for staining. Cedar is soft and can dent and scratch easily. Tilt bar staples do not hold well.

Cedar shutters work wonderfully for exterior shutters. The outstanding durability and resistance to decay of incense cedar makes it ideal for exterior use where moisture is present. This wood gives long service with little maintenance in such as mud sills, window sashes, sheathing under stucco or brick veneer construction, greenhouse benches, fencing, poles, trellises, and shutters. Incense cedar is also used extensively for exterior siding because it is dimensionally stable and holds paint well, in addition to being durable. Oh, yes, and bugs hate it!

Alder Shutters

Alder is our second choice for shutters. Alder is a smaller tree so only shorter lengths are available, thus tall shutters require finger joints.

Pine Shutters

Pine is a softwood. Many different species and grades of pine is available, so quality tends to be inconsistent.

Synthetics, Plastics, Vinyl, Fauxwood, and Poly

Many synthetics incorporate "wood" in their name, but most contain no wood - usually called faux wood or poly shutters. Made from stock size components with few, if any, custom options. Come in limited white colors, and cannot be stained. Look, feel, and sound like plastic. Relatively new product so limited customer satisfaction experience. Synthetics are less costly to manufacture. Heavy and tend to sag. All synthetics are manufactured from nonrenewable resources.

Window Shutters on a Budget by Sarah Wright

While there is great value in installing custom-made interior wood window shutters, sometimes they are still too expensive for certain applications. Some alternatives – including poly or vinyl shutters – are less expensive but also much less attractive. For a high-quality solution at a lower cost, look for a company that sells individual solid wood shutter panels that can be installed in any configuration.

When shopping for individual shutter panels, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. The most important factor is the material used to make the interior shutter panels. Basswood has the best characteristics for window shutters because it is a very straight hard wood with little distortion. Basswood also has a fine, uniform texture and indistinct grain, which make it superior for staining or painting. You should also look for a company that can make a large number of panel sizes so you can receive the best final fit for your window.

How To Determine Individual Panel Sizes to Order

It is best to determine how you will mount your shutters before ordering the shutter panels. Sometimes it is necessary to use hanging strips to attach shutters to the outside of the window opening. A reputable company will provide information about different installation methods so you can determine how best to install on a specific window.

Width:

Measure the width of the area you want the shutters to cover (NOT including any trim strips).

1. Divide this width by the number of panels you want across the window. This will give you the approximate width of each panel. Round this measurement up to the nearest 1/4 inch.

Example: Width = 36-7/16"
Divide by 4 and round up to nearest 1/4"
Order (4) shutter panels 9-1/4" wide

Height:

Up to 1" may be trimmed off the top and the bottom of each individual panel (a total of 2" per panel).

1. For a two tier unit (panels across the top and bottom), combine individual panel heights as required.

Finishing

A high-quality wood shutter panel can be painted or stained to a beautiful finish. Even if the shutters arrive and seem fairly smooth, a light sanding is advised before beginning the finishing process. After sanding and brushing off any dust, primer and paint can be applied. Often a more smooth finish is achieved by spraying the primer and paint, although the use of a high-quality brush can also result in a nice finish. When staining, follow the instructions given by the stain manufacturer. The stain manufacturer may recommend applying a wood conditioner before staining in order to ensure even stain color penetration.

Once your shutters are finished and installed, you will have a high-quality product that will increase the value of your home at a fraction of the cost of custom-made shutters.

Popular Blinds

Changing the look of your home really is not that difficult and does not require any more effort than installing window blinds. This might not seem like a very big deal to you, but once you have window blinds installed you will realize the huge difference it makes in the feel of your home. This is because window blinds add a softness to your windows and you can control the amount of light that come in your home and the amount of privacy you need and want. Blinds really do have a lot of uses and come in a variety of styles and colors. Some of the most popular types of window blinds include Roman blinds, Venetian blinds, mini blinds, vertical blinds, and woven wood blinds.

There are a large selection of blinds that include Venetian blinds, mini blinds, Roman blinds, woven wood blinds, and vertical blinds. Each of these types of blinds offers a special function or design that will enhance your home’s décor.

Venetian blinds are the typical horizontal blinds that can be raised or lowered depending on your need for light or privacy. They come in a variety of colors, sizes, and fabrics depending on your budget and needs.

Mini blinds are simply miniature Venetian blinds that can be installed in the window frame to create a different look. These can be purchased in the same price ranges as Venetian blinds as well as the variety of colors.

Vertical blinds are frequently made of a fabric composite, or even plastic or wood, and hang vertically. Because of this, vertical blinds are generally used to screen patio doors and larger window areas.

The woven wood blinds are natural looking as well because they are made from wood, weed, and grass fibers. As a result, they are great for homes that use a lot of wood and natural fibers as well in the décor.

Another option is to have your window blinds custom made in the exact fabric and style you desire as well dyed to match color if you desire. Having your blinds custom made does cost more money, so you might consider asking for a quote before choosing this option.

If your home needs a little updating, or some softness, then do some research on the types of blinds that are available in your budget. Then, decide on the colors and styles that will best reflect the unique design of your home. Once you pick out this, you will be able to buy your blinds.

Installing blinds in your home will really make a difference that is visible and that you will really enjoy. The best thing to do is go online or to your local home store and find out what blinds are available in your budget and the ones that would look best in your home.

Go ahead and start shopping for blinds that will update the look of your home without changing it. You can do this bit of decorating for a small budget and will see major results in the look and feel of your home.

Window Blinds Variations, And How They Can Fit Your Needs by Tim Murray

So you decided to go out and look for blinds, but there are so many of them! In this article you will get a brief intro into the pros and cons of every style out there.

There are many types of window blinds to select from, and selecting the type of blind you want depends on your window frame design and personal preference. Always be sure of what you want and then shop around for the best deal. Shopping with a reputable firm will ensure you get value for money and excellent support as well as quality blinds.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are easily fitted and effective for small or large windows. Because the fabric louvres can be opened and closed as well as rotated they are incredibly efficient at managing the level of light allowed into your room. Most new vertical blinds come in fabrics that are machine washable and flame retardant.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are efficient and very elegant looking. They traditionally come with horizontal wooden slats and are opened and closed with a cord. They look ideal in the home and the office.

Whatever style of blind you are looking for you will want to make sure that the blinds match the décor in the rest of your room. You can get blinds made from aluminium, fabric, wood and even woven woods; these are usually roller blinds and available in different types of wood. They give a beautiful, natural look to a room even when closed.

When measuring your windows to install window blinds it is important that you get the figures as accurate as possible, ensuring they don’t catch on the frame and you don’t have gaps around the edges.

Hunter Douglas is an excellent producer of cheap blinds. They will do any calculations needed so all you need to provide is accurate measurements of your windows. Another resource you may want to consider is American Blinds.

Inside Mount

When you mount your new window blinds inside a frame, your accurate measurements mean your blinds won’t catch against the frame. To ensure accuracy, take measurements from the top, middle and bottom of your window frame and write down the smallest width to the nearest 1/8 inch.

Then, measure the height in three places and record the longest of the three measurements, again rounded down 1/8 inch. You should also measure the depth that you will require.

Don’t do deductions or any other measurement yourself; leave this to the manufacturers instead. Simply give them the measurements you have taken and they will provide your window blinds to the correct size.

Outside Mount

For outside mounted window blinds measure the exact width at the top of the frame and round down to the nearest 1/8 inch. Measure the exact height at the outside edge of your frame, and again round this figure down 1/8 inch.

Finding The Right Window Treatment In Los Angeles And Chicago by Sarah Peters

Some of the most unique and individual décor consultants can be found in smaller centers, but for a truly competitive field that will supply window treatments for your home, you're looking at the larger cities like Los Angeles and Chicago.

Larger dealers have more contacts, often further afield both in distance, and in tastes, so that they can lay their hands on virtually any accessory, material, or extras that you need to create the right window treatment.

Of course, even large centers will have to consider not just the variations in the decorative aspect, but also in their functionality. A window treatment that works well in Los Angeles, might not be suited to the weather extremes of Chicago. Where one can use sheers year round, the other may require a good quality lined drape to not only offer privacy, but to keep out winter cold that can seep into a room from the glass.

Wherever you live, window treatments are going to be a major component of your home décor, and you want it to turn out just the way you imagined. Sometimes it means doing all the work yourself, to get every detail as you envisioned it, and occasionally it may mean ordering drapes or extras from consultants who design window treatments in places like Los Angeles or Chicago.

Whether your window treatment is a stand alone, or cooperative effort, the results will be exactly what you want, and in the end, that's what really matters.

Do You Know How To Use Window Coverings? by Sarah Peters

Window coverings serve an important role in your home, giving you privacy and also protecting your furniture and décor from the harshness of prolonged, direct sunlight. But the range of choices is so wide, including blinds, shades, shutters and curtains, that some homeowners have a hard time deciding which they prefer, or whether they can mix their window coverings according to the room where they are installed.

There are no hard and fast rules about what you should use, versus what you could use. The decision is up to your tastes, preferences, and what works with your decorating scheme. What you decide is great for one room, may not fit in another, so you switch from blinds in the bathroom to window shades in the bedroom, and that is just fine, as long as you are happy with the way the décor looks when you're done.

For example, the living room is where most people entertain visitors and family, and because it is often a "public" room, people tend to go for more distinguished or striking window coverings, that may include shutters or curtains, and occasionally a combination of both.

A beautiful set of lined drapes, with sheers underneath, and topped by a decorative swag, are not only functional, but very decorative and can be coordinated with the furniture, or serve as an accent to the overall scheme of a room. Sometimes simplicity creates an equal impact, with a set of antique slatted shutters that fold out from underneath a pair of brocaded lined drapes.

Whether it's a misguided baseball, or storm damage, sooner or later most homeowners will have to deal with window replacement, a chore that is not high on any handyman's list of things they want to do with their spare time.

This could involve storm window replacement, replacement of window screens, or installing an entire replacement window. No matter the reason for the work, you really need to take a few things into account before heading for the building supply store.

The first consideration is the age of your home. Older houses, particularly farm-style or country houses, tend to have very old types of windows, consisting of wooden sashes and hardware that is no longer made. If you wish to keep the antique look intact, you might have to search out a supplier of obsolete or out-of-date locks and fastenings to complete your work.

Most modern houses lean towards convenience, and window replacement for them is fairly simple, involving a building industry standard sized window that is easy to acquire. These are also the type of windows that have such features as sliding multiple panes that save you the bother of storm window replacement.

They do, however, have screen panels for summer, but screen window replacements for modern windows are also easy to obtain, and pop right into the sliding tracks.

If you're considering window replacement for energy efficiency, it is unlikely you will get exactly the same dimension windows that you have now, unless they are custom made. In that case, it would be wise to seek the advice of experts at your building supply store, or hire a professional to make sure you get the most out of your remodeling dollars.

5 Window Treatment Ideas To Improve Your Home by Sarah Peters

Coming up with interesting window treatment ideas that bring out the best in your windows as they bring in the sunshine, is a challenge to anyone with a yen to decorate. There are tons of non-traditional options and tips to make the most of what you have, and give your windows that million dollar look on a mostly discount budget.

How about recycling old items? If you inherited lace tablecloths that are no longer fresh and white, you can still get a lot of mileage and an interesting antique window treatment, by using a sewing machine to turn the tablecloths into window curtain panels. You might even have some old lace curtains on hand, that need to be brightened, but the bleaches have failed you.

Accept their "age" and build on it, by staining them with tea for a totally antique look. Simply take a bucket and use half hot water and half boiling water, to "steep" 30 black tea bags. When the water is dark, add your curtains and stir the mixture. Then let them sit for 30 hours, with the occasional stir to keep the color evenly distributed. Remove the curtains, squeeze out the liquid, and hang them to dry.

Window treatment ideas aren't always about curtains. The once popular wooden window blinds are making a comeback with people who prefer the warm, natural tones of wood to go with a wide variety of décors. Antique folding window covers can be had for a song at garage and auction sales, then refinished, and if you are artistic at all, decorated with tole paintings.

Little touches can add a lot to plain curtains. If you have a set of long, lined drapes and would like to liven them up, place small hooks or other mountings above where the rod is held, and top your curtains with silk flower garlands, or just silk greenery. There's no more fuss to cleaning these, than there is to washing a swag or valance. Just put a little soft dish soap in a tub of water, swish the silk garland around, rinse and hang to dry.

Your window treatment ideas are limited only by your imagination, and the time you have to spend decorating. Some of the most interesting and attractive looks are born from using leftovers, cast-offs and your own ingenuity.
